Travis Bertrand's (Drhorsepower) semi-live hunt in Arizona

Ups and downs are part of the sport man. No sulking! Lets hear the story.
I have been lurking and following you posts, great stuff! Keep it up!

Travis,
I've often wondered if I would be willing to do a live hunt myself or not. Bad things happen and the added element of doing it 'live' can be tough. One of those elements is the possibility of things going bad and the whole world seeing it. We have all been there man. Keep you're head up and know that we've all been there boss! KCCO :)

Travis , the good the bad and the ugly ? I don't think there are very many guys here who have not had some bad days and shots we would take back. I know I have had some bad moments and do my best not to judge others decisions that have gone south in a hurry. I've shot a big 4x4 and recovered a yearling spike to mention just one winning moment from my past. Unless there are legal entanglements air it out. I bet we will be more understanding of whatever happened than you are of yourself.

ok, so yesterday I had a late start, but within seconds of getting to my glassing spot, I found him. I hiked in there, gained elevation to see if he was still in his hidy hole I have seen him in since the first time I saw him. It is a tiny little basin in between two knobs of rocks that is probably 100 yards wide at the very widest. He was still in there and everything was going to plan. I hiked around the hill and got wind in my favor. I was now in the basin with him but he is feeding out the other side! 100 yards away and i see white buttts. I watched them work down a drainage a couple hundred yards and bed down in the flats. It didnt look like there was a way to get within shooting range from any direction so I watched him from HIS house in the basin. I felt like an intruder in a strangers house, seeing whats in the fridge, laying on his bed to see how soft it is. I just looked around and every two minutes or so I would peek over the rocks to see what they were doing. I thought they would come back up to the basin and feed on the western slope like I have seen them do the last two days. They finally got up. started heading back up the drainage they went down! Everything going according to plan. I worked my way over to my spot that I had the best shooting lanes.... waited....... waited some more and finally saw the lead doe in the drainage but they missed their exit! they kept heading up! I quickly hightailed it around the hill to try and head them off and ambush them. When I arrived at the drainage on other side, I seen the little buck that was with them( 3x with one antler) heading up opposite mountain. I knew he was in tow so I hightailed it up above them and found the rest of them.feeding up a small cut. I got set up above them bu 150 yards. daylight is running out now, the sun is starting to fade behind the mountains.they were still feeding up to me with wind in my favor. 127 the bedded down.... with not much time left I decided I would back out, get out of sight and get within range. It only took a strep to get busted by a doe. I froze ready for the long stare off. they were curious of what they saw move and got 86 yards down hill. I was going to take shauns and hardstalks advice and let er fly but when he turned broadside, two does stepped in front of him and then he turned looking straight at me without a presentable shot.By then they had enough of me and hightailed it towards their basin. I quickly tried getting in front of them once out of sight but once i rounded the mountain I saw them heading for old Mexico a half mile in front of me. What a disgusting feeling watching the buck you have been after leave like that. ..

today a friend I have met down here who has probalbly killed more 100 inch coues deer with a bow than smallpox took me hunting. it wasnt ten minutes from the truck on our way to a glassing spot that I stopped to glass the hill we were heading up and found a nice buck! We tried coming in on him from every which way and finally got 120 yards slightly up from him.He has a 120 yard pin on his bow so he let one fly, didnt account for slight down hill and shot just over his back . It was pretty cool to watch. after that we switched spots and he immediately found some Javelina. The winds couldnt decide which way to blow but I went in anyway. They came in this tiny basin with a few drainages in it. I was smack dab in the middle and they were above me 40 yards in tall brush. the wind swirled, I saw noses in the air and a bunch of waddling little Javelinas heading up the hill as fast as their fat butts can make it! except one.... this one was 33 yards up the hill in thick brush. I knew I didtnt have long so I let one fly hoping for the best. The shot looked money. I saw my arrow in the brush on far side of the pig and it ran off. I didnt know if brush got the best of me or if it was a good shot. I then saw a pig to my right within 30 easily but didnt want to shoot without knowing about my previous shot. I slowly worked my way up hill and that pig took off not long after, I get to my arrow and I see no blood but just a dusty arrow. DARN. oh well had a good time today.

That's bow hunting and that's why we do it. Such an awesome challenge. Do you have any time left?

yes slim. I have 3 days left but thinkg of taking a few more days off of work. If i do I will have to the 27th or so...IM NOT A QUITTER although my standards are being lowered by the minute

Shaun, that is exactly how I have been doing it! I have some holiday time built up and some vaca time so burning a few more days shouldn't be a big deal.
