I will be traveling to Canada in the next week and am taking a crossbow instead of a rifle. I will be traveling by air. know what the regulations are for the firearms, I am wanting to make sure I haven’t missed something. My understanding is, you don’t have to have any paperwork just declare it when you go through customs. If someone with experience can confirm I would appreciate it.

Shouldn't need any paperwork since they're not regulated up here at all. Might want to just check off the weapon box on the customs card. They'll ask you about it (probably take a quick look) and let you carry on. I have only flown to NZ and back with a compound bow from inside canada, no issues without any forms

I’ve flown into the USA and back to Canada with my compound bow. Going into the USA, it was considered sporting goods by US border guards. Coming into Canada it was considered a weapon by the Canadian guards. No issues bringing it in, I just declared I didn’t have any weapons so there was a couple more questions as I was leaving with it and they clarified I needed to declare a weapon when coming in.
This was at YVR (Vancouver airport) where you do all your declarations at the computer kiosk and then it prints a paper off you bring to the guards.

Went from Canada to the USA and back with a compound as well. I declared it . No issues flying down, the guy was more interested in what we were hunting than our bows. On the way back we were pulled aside and they asked to look in our cases. No issues, just a look inside and we were on our way.
