Training rifle 22lr too small?

Yes shooting a 22 lr is good practice. I have a 200 yard range at my house and I dedicated an entire summer shooting 50 to 100 rounds of 22 a week from various positions . My match scores went up when I went to the bigger rifle , trigger control and follow through is still very important with the 22 especially when trying to hit small targets at 200 yards .

I believe fundamentals should be solid before giving attention to wind reads and bullet drops. And practicing fundamentals should be returned to frequently. A .22 can be invaluable for that.

Squirrel hunting with a .22lr is the premium rifleman training activity. There's nothing better. It's available to literally anyone - almost anywhere in the world - it costs almost nothing, you don't have to travel cross-country to do it or pay money for it and no two shots are ever the same. But every shot happens under time constraints and very few of them can be made offhanded (though there's a place for that too). Hunt in hills and you'll get both uphill and downhill shots. It forces you to learn improvised field rests like nothing else. It won't teach you every specialized shooting discipline but it'll teach you more general stuff. And it's fun to boot.

It isn't the sport of Kings, but it should be the sport of Princes.
