Training Pudelpointer Pup

Ah, the 2x4s is a great idea! I can't shoot a pistol in my current neighborhood, but I was planning to start with clapping, then clanging pots and pans, and I'll also incorporate the 2x4s. Thanks!
A couple of 2x4s works surprisingly well. I had a couple attached with a hinge and with a ½" dowel in the end of one for a handle. Just give it a whip-flick motion and it gives an excellent crack

I’ve been in your shoes before. Also, don’t overthink it. If you start reading serval books, You’re going to get several different opinions/approaches, then you’ll be more confused than your dog haha.

I got my pup from Bob Farris and followed his book with great results. I’d highly recommend sticking to one training program. Besides obedience, a dog with good genetics will just need wild bird exposure to become a good bird dog.

Only thing I’d recommend is exposing her to as many dogs and people in a safe environment as possible. This is also covered in Bob’s book.

Also, we use a Gunner Intermediate for our (50lb) PP.

Best of luck!

Thank you! Yeah I have read 3 books and that's probably partly why I'm so worked up haha, it gets confusing for sure. But Bob's seems like the way to go. I appreciate it

Thats awesome, congrats! Thank you for the advice - I've been trying to decide whether to incorporate the whistle. I really like this

Your natural whistle or yelling won't cut thru a windy day hunting wide open country!

Also, two cents on noises - make noise with your pots and pans, 2x4s, starter pistol on fun runs, but also make a point of essentially ignoring their reaction. If you brush it off as no big thing (i.e. no reaction from you), they pick up on that cue and just assume it's a normal thing! Make the gunfire associated with something good, food/birds, and you'll do fine!

@jlw0142 this half a paragraph should stick with you, and you should say it out loud every time you start overthinking. Make a great obedient dog, create the bond of a lifetime doing so, and then let your dog and birds train you how to be a handler.

Your dog will need minimal help, and overdoing it might efff it up.

Why? Because often it's an InJustice to the dog. Today's society is filled with "I Want" folks. I want the dog because it looks Cool. I want the dog because it's Trendy. Or so I can add a cool sticker to my truck.

Want a pet and a buddy? That's great. Get a Lab or a rescue or whatever flavor shit eater you want.

There's shit tons of "rescues" and "wash out" dogs because folks bite off more than they can chew with a hotter bred dog they THINK is cool. Yet live in a cul de sac and do almost nothing with the dog. And wonder why the dog becomes a monster, and end up re-homing it.

I hope he uses the piss out of the dog. But Pudels are becoming very trendy, as they tend to be a bit smaller than other Versatiles, and a bit less sharp. Any dog that becomes trendy is never a good thing. For the sake of the dog, I hope he landed in a house that will use him more than two weeks in Kansas.
This is a bad take. While I agree with you that if you buy a hunting dog you should use it as god intended however there are many places in this country were we do not have wild birds. Pa for instance we have grouse but few of them compared to other states. Pheasants used to be “wild” but the population declined and now all we have is stocked birds by the game commission. As I mentioned prior I’m on gsp #3. All of them can hunt. Grouse, wood cock, and pheasants. At some point purist such as yourself need to realize without people
Owning such breeds in areas that do not have “wild birds” these dogs would begin to not exist.

A lot of guys in pa have bird dogs even though we chase stocked birds. I will tell you this you have to work for them here. 2-3 days after stocking a majority of them are gone and in order to find them that far past stocking you will put some miles on.

I live on 1/3 of an acre and my dogs have great lives. The river is 20 mins away where they go to swim. They play and chase after robins in the yard and can go run in fields 30 mins away. Although those are not fields I would hunt on a consistent basis

If you limit dogs to the 6-10 states that still have wild birds, people who own 2+ acres, and people who do not work or are retired you would have 3/4 less people owning dogs. At that point it’s like a woman looking for a guy over 6 foot 2, making over 150,000 dollars a year, living in a 4000 sq ft house, while having blonde hair and blue eyes. It’s like 1 in 1 million……
