Just more media sensationalization to get clicks and watches. Media nowadays is trash.
I would argue that contaminating a large water way and getting caught trying to cover it up is more than sensation.

If this is indeed the standard operating procedure perhaps the added exposure is warranted?

@realunlucky is correct. It's a combination of Precision Scheduled Railroading that has cut back on capital maintenance projects, increase in train length and weight thereby increasing in-train forces, and push from management to cut corners or face the fear of repercussions.

The railroads have done a good job of pissing everyone off and their actions are being shown in the spotlight right now.

When I was a kid my stepdad worked for a company that specialized in re-railing as a heavy equipment operator - operating front end loaders that could pick up a derailed train car and put it back on tracks (if it was salvageable enough to do it). Intensely large loaders. My father worked for the railroad most of his life too.

As stated, derailments happen all the time. Just way more coverage now that media outlets can get some clicks.

Not all contaminate large water ways. Even the rare ones that do im of the opinion that things that happen hundreds or thousands of miles from me like a train derailment isn’t news i need to see. Same lines as school shootings and such, shouldn’t be covered.

Mainstream news is just looking for ratings. The more they can sensationalize, create panic/alarm the better for them. The world is a much better place when you turn it all off.

Violent crime in the US is down ~40% since the 1990’s, but you’d never know it by watching the news. This sounds like the same sort of thing.

Easier to cover and be shown around the country or world within minutes. Also, when the new agencies want to push an agenda or topic it will make it seem like the world is exploding but if they don't want you to hear about it mum is the word. Look at Jan. 6th vs a year of cities burning and people trying to take over cities. which one had more of an acutal affect on people's lives in this country?

For you old deadhead hippies . "Driving that train high on cocaine . Casey Jones you better watch your speed " . Wonder what percentage are drug related (you derail a train your peeing in a cup with blood tests) . Usually alcohol is left up to the drunk italian cruise ship captains to run it aground . Lol

Seems like train derailments are getting more common each week.

Whats up ya think?
It’s like a lot of things- flavor of the month for the media. It’s top of mind right now so the media is covering it more for click bait. Don’t hear to much about the heroin/opioid epidemic because it’s not interesting anymore, it’s still going on obviously.
These derailments have been swept under the rug for decades by the rr companies. We have over 160,000 miles of track in North America moving countless tons of freight every day 24/7, derailments should be expected. Our infrastructure is also failing and very fragile at this point from roads, bridges, transmission lines, and all those tracks are also. It’s going to be more common in the upcoming years……until the next hot news topic comes along.

Just hypothesizing here, but with Brandon and the current administration all but shutting down oil drilling and pipelines, the only way to move said oil is via railway. If they can show that trains are just NOT SAFE, would that be grounds for banning oil transport via rail and lead to an excuse and even bigger push for electric vehicles and such?
It would be in a world where facts matter. But, in the political world, that is never considered. Instead, it’s based on who it cost money and who stands to make money.

More like it is a lack of sleep and pushed all the time. Trains are longer and more difficult to control now with PRS, companies all about the dollar, management that is pushed to make numbers and computer programs that mess up train marshaling all the time. Those in charge don't really care if a train is built with a bunch of empties between fulls, or heavy. You get one good pull or push you are coming apart. Especially on trackage that is a roller coaster and they want you to maintain track speed. Oh, and to cut cost they deferred maintenance and cut track maintenance crews.

The old days of a lot of people being drunks and druggies is over on the railroad, it does happen, but not as much. I have heard all the stories from the old heads. Making $100k a year not many people are going to piss it away.
