Trail Access Restrictions - No UTVs = No Horses

It’s a stupid rule in your opinion. You shared your opinion, almost everyone else that commented simply shared theirs and a little bit of the “why”. It just so happens that most of the people that weighed in disagreed with you, including myself. Some were residents, some were nonresidents, some were horse people, some were not, you got a pretty “fair” cross section of people that hunt the west.

It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to understand that a loud exhaust (multiple of them) pressure the crap out of animals when compared to a moose sized critter that “pollutes everything” by…pooping everywhere, just like moose and elk do.

In the sense that “more people use the land and will vote to protect it” more access like what you are looking for can be a good thing. I understand that side of the coin completely.

Otherwise, as far as hunting goes, specifically backcountry hunting and public land more/easier access is almost always a bad thing. The animals were holed up where they were for a reason, because the masses can not (or will not) get to them. The biologists obviously don’t want the masses getting to them.

I just bought a side by side for dog training and ice fishing. It’s also awesome to just go for an evening cruise. I live in a town with 2 stop lights . Farmer wouldn’t let us drive pickups in to set decoys but he lets us use the sxs to pull the trailer in. Used one a year out in Idaho but seemed more of a pain in the ass the bring maybe that’s because we just followed the rules. It was nice going up some fs roads that beat the shit out of pickups. I would never buy anything from out west after I seen some of the places people drive vehicles and pull campers .

Dealing with horses suck but banning them is a really dumb idea.

Limiting motorized vehicles vs horses is hardly stupid . I have a sxs and happily hunt where they are not allowed. In Utah the sxs and quad hunters are relentless the of trail crawling on my hands and knees to get to a place they can’t touch is unreal . Save a very few I have had only great interactions with the back county horse crowd . You may want to temper your view …

Add to that the damage sxs and atv’s do to roads. Plenty of roads get torn up from side by sides ripping through them when closed or going faster than necessary and tear up roads. Then the county or forest service has to spend money to fix it. Nothing is quite as fun as almost getting in a head on collision with a side by side because they want to go 75 miles an hour around blind corners.

After reading this thread I can only assume that any fat idiot from the west can take a horse and pollute the trails.

Look I don't actually want to ban horses or even expect equal access for horses and utvs. Since some of you have a serious problem with reading comprehension, I'll repeat my point from the OP.

I get that you don't want UTVs going anywhere and tearing up everything. I'm just saying, if you're going to close an ATV trail for hunting season it should be closed to horses and mules as well.

We had the same complaint in our country a couple of decades ago. A bunch of quad drivers wanted access to the land we hunt on (USFS) because all of the elk were there.

The open quad land is roughly 200 times the area we hunt on foot and horseback. The constant noise from the motorized vehicles moves the game to our side of the valley.

Most of them are too lazy to walk. I see the sxs all summer going by my house in groups of 30. I cut trails no wider than 20" to allow horses and game access. Wider and you have a dirt track and erosion.

A few points additional points OP has made that also make no sense.

You say horses are an exotic species and should not be allowed. -False. Not only are wild horses common in most western states, the origin of horses from the Paleolithic era is in North America. So not only are wild horses here now, they were here 2 million years ago.

You say horses cause pollution on the trails with horse $h!t. Yes, lol you actually made that remark. So, something that erodes in a few months is pollution? God forbid you step in a few horse turds with your fancy new boots you bought for your big western excursion?

It’s the west, the place was founded and explored with horses and mules. Nobody wants to listen to frickin sxs drivers treating every road and trail like the Baja 1000. But I’ve never heard of anyone complaining that they could heard those damn horses whinny’ing from 3 miles away.

Dude…maybe sitting in a tree waiting for a whitetail 75 yards from your pickup is more up your alley

I wish there were *more* restrictions on ATV’s and UTV’s and I haven’t been on a horse since I broke my arm (for the second time) on dads barrel racing horse I wasn’t supposed to be riding in the fourth grade.

Keep wild places wild. There is nothing more out of place and disheartening than being in the middle of nowhere, miles from a road and having a quasi biker gang of overweight suburbanites come screaming around the bend on their expensive go-carts.

Mountain bike? Cool
Horses and mules? Cool
E-bikes? Yeah alright
Motorized vehicles? Negative. Ride them on the national forest roads with the cars if you really want to get them out of the culdesac.

Just my opinion.

Was following until you got to e-bikes. They have motors; they are motorized vehicles, they are not currently allowed in wilderness areas, and in my view, this rule should not be changed.
