Make sure you Google the pink milkshake issue and make sure it's not an issue with the truck you're looking at

How do you guys think the new Toyotas will "age" I totalled my Xterra with 160k miles last month, and replaced it with a 2021 4Runner.
The engine in the 2021 is the same it has been for a while, the 4.0 V6 is one of the most reliable engines out there. With proper maintenance you should get over 300K pretty easily with very few problems. I have 98K so far on my 2017 and have had absolutely 0 wrong with it so far. Toyotas are awesome machines, also have a 2002 sequoia with 186K no issues, brother has a 2012 tundra with 189K no issues and my dad had a 93 pickup that got 400K before giving it away to a friend who drove it for another 5+ years. Keep them maintained properly and 300K should be pretty doable in any Toyota.

Going to look at a 98 with 244k owned by a Toyota mechanic tomorrow so we’ll see they said the timing belt and valve cover gaskets have been done I know it has the locker.

Yup. I bypassed the radiator and did LBJ before I hardly drove mine. Recently replaced the throttle body and plugs.

The 2003 V8 version I bought is going strong at 200,000 plus miles. The 2018 SR5 my wife drives is at only 55,000 miles but going well. I'd be pretty certain any of the various model years will be the most dependable in their class.

I think this is the funny part that most people don’t include when they express how reliable their vehicle is. It is all about the engine and people forget that this stuff is done.

I have an 03 Tahoe that I will put up to any of these in reliability. 284,000 miles and going strong. With normal wear and tear maintenance items done. I need to do the plugs again.

When I think of reliability it is how often had it left me stranded somewhere. This one never has.

We have a 98 with 280k miles, it’s a great ride for us. Did the valve cover gaskets about 10k ago. We bought it with 150k and the only issue we had with it was with a fuel injector, replaced them all and hasn’t been a problem since. I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of it bc I couldn’t find one for what we paid for it 5 years ago, and it always goes.

I had an '02 with over 225k miles. I beat the heck out of that thing and it still drove like a charm. Can't go wrong with an older Toyota

I debated switching to a 4th Gen V8, but really like the one I have now.

How difficult did you find the head gasket fix? You had to pull the engine, correct?

Have you looked into chemical solutions for your leak? I have an F250 with a small leak. Considering: https://gobdp.com/product/head-gasket-sealer-38386/

Good reviews on the Ford forums.

I really prefer the look of the 4th gens, especially when lifted and modified, but my 3rd gen is an awesome truck.
Just had to pull the heads and get them resurfaced so I wouldn't say it was overly difficult just a lot of parts to keep up with. Wish I would've taken it to a shop to check if the block was still square, even though the only solution is to get another block. Toyota service manuals are a lifesaver.

I did use some chemical solutions and just managed to clog my heater core. I'm almost certain it would've worked with an iron block though. I only notice the leak at start up especially when cold, this makes sense since the aluminum block expands quickly and then the head gasket will seal.

3rd Gens are awesome. I'd still have one if I didn't get a steal on my current '04

4Runners are very reliable. Fold the rear seats down for a easy place to sleep. I own 3, 97,98, and a 99. All limited 4wd. 99 has a factory locker. All have over 250k miles. No problem if I had a reason to cross the country tomorrow. Yes, I replace Suspension's and other parts. I use and abuse them though. Motor and tranny are strong.

Nice looks good, and the driver seat looks like it hasn’t fallen apart yet they usually are all ripped up.

I have a 96 4runner in the SR5 package,3.4 v6. Its a solid vehicle. I paid under 4K for about 5 years ago with 175k on it and It has 232k now. I expect I'll get it to 300k, but I wouldn't want to put much money in one over 200k.

I've added an external trans cooler and changed the suspension. Not very happy with the OME springs I put on - too soft/lightweight, and it still has ass-sag. I've probably changed other stuff, but I can't remember. I do all my own wrenching and its a fairly easy vehicle to work on. Some rust has finally made it through in a 2 inch hole in the rocker on each side, just under where the front doors swing.

Mostly, its my wife's car but I use it quite a bit. I'd call it out main vehicle at this point, and we have 5 (f350 dually, excursion, old and beat BMW 323, CJ8 are the others).
