Today I learned I don't know what a 300" bull is

Great story. In the most respectful way possible, do yourself a favor and study elk bone structure a bit. You should never have to squeek an arrow past or through the thin portion of a scapula. The scapula is far from where you should be aiming IMO.

I commonly hear "i would have got him but my arrow didnt blow through the scapula". If you hit the scapula you didnt make a good shot to begin with. Again, my opinion.

I agree, you are correct. I was aiming lower than the scapula, but in the shoulder rather than behind it

Congratulations on an awesome bull!!
I agree you should get it officially measured AND enter it in the books. The OM’s don’t get paid by the club to score peoples animals and from what I understand the club doesn’t even supply the measuring tools. They pay for the stuff out of their own pocket and take time out of their day to give you an official score (whether you enter it or not). Don’t take advantage of the system. The least you can do is support the club with the $35 entry fee.

Nice bull. I have a couple like that. When you see guys throw around 300” like it’s a starting point it always makes me roll my eyes. 300 IS A BIG ASS BULL!!!!

This^^^^^^^^^!!!!!!!

Dang nice bull and yes, a 300 or ANY bull is a dandy.

Congrats.

Good call, I will do that

Filled my Colorado archery elk tag yesterday. It was an epic adventure, and exactly the bull I dreamed about finding in this unit. Now, inches don't matter much to me, and every bull I've killed previously has been small, but when I saw him on the ground I thought he was for sure a 300" bull. Got home and rough taped him, and he's 270". I learned today that a lot of the so called 300" bulls I've seen in my life, probably weren't. View attachment 449813View attachment 449814
Sweet!

Nice bull! Looks like you measured accurately.

You will find that most scores on the internet are from the WAG method. (Wild A** Guess). You usually will find that if you subtract 5" from antelope 10" from coues, 20" from muleys and 50" from elk you are in the correct ballpark.

I agree with your comment. So, based on this, what is your thought process with a quartering towards you elk? Is the primary concern the bottom of the scapula and humerus? And is it as big of a concern as we all talk about?

The "knuckle" (where the blade and humerus come together) is a non-starter with a bow. I've put arrows through the scapula just above the knuckle on quartering to shots, and they were devastatingly quick kills. But I've also put one right into the knuckle on the biggest bull I've ever shot at and got no penetration at all. That was with a 500gr arrow at 285fps. Sometimes it's best to just wait for a better shot angle.

Nice elk, a lot people are full of crap or have no idea how to measure an elk. 300” is a lot of antler.

Pictures are deceiving, here are the last 3 bulls all side by side. The biggest bull nets 303”, out of all of those I thought the 280 bull was the biggest prior to the shot. All sitting together you can defiantly see how much larger the 300 bull is that the others.

The bull in my Avatar is taped 297" and your bull is every inch as big. I would retape it if it matters. I'm not an inch guy either. I hunt for the experience and peace. Nice bull Bro and Great Pics for the memories.
I don’t see 297. I don’t see anywhere CLOSE to 297. Short beams, short backs and fronts, good mass though. Unless he’s 60” wide he looks like a 260” bull to me. I’d love to see a score sheet!

This post sums it up. I wish you’d asked for scores. I bet they’d average 20 points higher than what you posted.
