Overall, I like it but it does seem to me that it is being enforced arbitrarily. Mule deer sections, they get hammered, go to the elk section, not so much.

It also needs to be decided what is defined as acceptable. I have seen people get reamed for asking about a unit before the application period and I have seen people get reamed for drawing and not doing any research. So, which one is it?

What does it take to graduate from FNG status? I gladly share info when asked about previous units. I also use the Huntin Fool member draw list (hunters that previously had that tag) and now a contributor as well.

Nice if you live close enough to do that. If you coming from the east coast it's no feasible. I did a WY elk last year and receive some general information that helped me get into elk quickly. It was a specific area just terrain that I should look towards. I was appreciative. This year I have shared my tracks with two guys that drew that area this year. Hope it helps them out.

So you got info from someone else, then gave away that info to two additional guys after your hunt? Now those two guys will most likely share that info with a few others after the hunt. So im sure you can see how a spot gets burned with just 4-5 people doing exactly what you did. Glad you had a good hunt. In 6-7 years when you get at GEN tag again, I hope that area is still productive for you and all the others.

I had a conversation with my brother in law (@wllm over on hunt talk -- don't bother with that forum, it's for political whining) and he was of the opinion that he'd never hunt the same spot, so he was willing to help anyone. And I asked him if that respects the animal or the craft. Shut him down real quick.

This is the deal. Put in the effort, embrace the possibility that you'll not kill something, enjoy early mornings and late nights, be patient, slow the eff down, and most importantly, stop oversharing.

If these spots are secret the locals must be blind. I have no hesitation sharing information on my past hunts and hope the information helps others. If they have success based on my help all the better. That being said I understand the reluctance.

If these spots are secret the locals must be blind. I have no hesitation sharing information on my past hunts and hope the information helps others. We bust out butts to find elk, keep track of elk, hunt elk, and you wander here from out of state and find a few elk because someone pointed you to them with no work whatsoever besides a question online. Afterwards you broadcast the information to a few folks on the internet and defend it. You clearly don't understand our reluctance. You've admitted to the very reason I've decided to not share with anyone online again.

I’ll speak an opinion that probably isn’t going to be popular, I think unit number threads should exist. I would venture to guess almost every one of us has gone to the internet sleuthing to find info on a unit before deciding to apply/hunt there. Unit number threads aren’t the problem, it is when guys get super specific with information about specific spots in the threads that is the problem. I don’t share much info on units on the web but how else is anyone to get a basic understanding of terrain, habitat and animal populations without being able to ask, and for some units/places there may not be people that we know personally to be able to ask for information.

THIS!!!!!!!! I used to spend every extra dollar I had on gas to go see new places. I'd put eyes on it then go to acme mapper (pre Google Earth) and try and figure out pockets of the areas I thought might be good. Then I cover every inch of it. It was a pile of work but when you found something it was yours!!! And man was it a rewarding feeling.


The hunting community has gotten too accustomed to having all of the information available. Sad thing is, it's no different than the fact that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Most of these clowns show up and have no idea what they're doing. Still goes a long way toward running a spot.

I like the rule. I made similar posts as an FNG but i stuck around, too many posts loot forums for advice and are gone forever while the posts stay up and pop up on google for anyone to see.

I don't give anything away to friends anymore, let alone internet guys. I have literally 1000's of dollars and thousands of hours of time spent to find good spots. Call me selfish I guess.

ALL GEN areas are unlimited for residents. Its the Non-residents that cause the over crowding and spot burning.

Not to sound like a jerk but the answer is the same as it’s been since the caveman. Put boots on the ground, scout, learn the area, then spend time hunting it. Do that and you will have your answers.

People need to be less reliant on technology and the internet when it comes to these types of things.

We're obviously not going to change your opinion, but for what it's worth, "spot burning" is a sad phenomenon and shows zero respect for the animal themselves. You are essentially bargaining with chips that aren't yours -- no animal on the planet is going to give up information on where they live to a predator.

Rather, predators learn to hunt by following patterns, learning behavior, and being a part of the landscape. Sharing info on the internet essentially turns an elk into a commodity and a hunt into a market exchange.

That's not why we hunt, and I would encourage you to give it a try.

Same. The west is getting too compressed with hunters, recreation, development, etc. to expect that even one post won't change something.

Yep. Go learn how to hunt FFS. Put boots on the ground, and you'll quickly find that all the internet information is hit or miss anyways. You gotta learn how to find, then actually kill the damn things, wherever you go.
