Tires

I'm running Firestone Transforce A/T on my GM 2500 diesel. I purchased these for my use of hauling our fifth wheel when the wife and I travel (Hunt/Scout :)). and checking our pastures they seem to work well for me. I have 45,000 miles on them now and still lots of life. This last fall I was out in Western Wyoming running up and down some logging two tracks with no issues, yes there were some spots I avoided as they were obvious nothing was going through except two feet.

I've got 285/75 16 DuraTracs on my Tacoma right now, maybe 14k on them and I'm taking them off and putting my favorite tires back on, Cooper ST Maxx. Don't really understand the love affair with DuraTracs myself. I haven't been too impressed since the day I got them. Figured they would grow on me. Not really. The ST Maxx have a much tougher sidewall, and I spend a ton of time on desert roads and in the mountains so peace of mind means a lot. I think my last set of ST Maxx I got about 70k or so out of them, but I knocked my alignment off and caused some premature wear on them or I'm sure 85k would have been easily doable. Just my thoughts, just don't overlook the Maxx, great tire.

From the days of research I have done, going bigger diameter and more weight per tire lowers MPGs.

I went from 265/70 17 to 285/75 17 this spring, on my gas f250, looks much better but I lost 2mpg highway this fall going out west. They are only about 2" taller and 1" wider but a lot heavier!!

I went with Nitto Dura Grapplers in E, they seem like they will last a long time, and I have been happy with their performance in ice and snow and plowing

We got the same rig Bruce. Yours is shiny, mine is a rig that looks like it has been on 20k miles of logging roads, and it has! got any more pictures from a side view? What size tire are you running? If you ever get rid of your truck, let me know, I might need it! How miles you got? I'm at 320k

These are the 34" Xtremes

Previously I was running the regular 35.5" ATs

...but I wanted a more aggressive tread for the super slick mud I find myself blasting through in NW AZ. The Xtreme didn't come in a 35.

I bought it used for $16K in 2003 when it was four years old and put a 9" lift and the bigger, wider tires on it. Now it's got 165K on it and is still the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. They say when ya get a good Ram, they last forever. Guess I lucked out. You must have too...320K!! Wow! But I do look after our cars and make sure every new sound is instantly addressed, the regular maintenance is performed on schedule and that everything is in proper order and safe to operate. I've taken this truck into remote places far from water that I shouldn't have and it's always gotten me home. Many times I have thought about getting a new Ram but this one keeps running smoothly and I prefer the rounded lines on the older model. It's just sexier and bolder IMO. But who knows...the Ram Hellcat may push me into a new truck. <g>

I have heard nothing but good about the transforce. If I spent most of days on pavement loaded or unloaded with occasional dirt roads I would seriously consider the transforce. I think they would last for a lot of miles. Someone else mentioned the Michilen LTZ I think and our local tire guy touts them highly as well for the same type of usage.

Another vote for BFG AT KO2s. Put a set on my Silverado 10k miles ago and they still look brand new. They ride nice, get great traction, and didnt change my mileage at all.

My stepdad has run them on his trucks for years and years and he drives a lot of miles, and you'd be hard pressed to get him to switch to anything else!

The new KO2s have sweeter looking sidewalls than the older style ones, so they look really nice on the truck.

I had a set of Duratracs, and really liked the wear and tread pattern, but they were the worst on getting flats driving the Oregon logging roads on my 2008 Wrangler. Seemed like everytime I headed up the mountain I ended up changing a tire.

I swapped out to the Goodyear Kevlar MT/R's a year ago and like them a lot better.

In my opinion though, BF AT's are about the best all-around tire. Have run them on many vehicles.

The BFG AT's are just a solid all-around tire.

This may be misguided based on comments above, but if folks who put bigger tires on their vehicles are seeing a decrease in gas mileage based on what the vehicle computer is reporting, it may be lying. The vehicle doesn't know that the newer tires are bigger and that the vehicle is going farther on each revolution so the reported mileage becomes inaccurate. You need to figure out how much larger the new tire is on a % basis than stock and multiply the vehicle's reported mileage by 1 + that factor.

Sometimes tires with heavier sidewalls (i.e. E-rated) make the tires so much heavier that it really decreases gas mileage. I am 40,000 miles into learning that lesson the hard way. I bet I lost close to 2 mpg.

You can also use your GPS to figure out how far you have actually traveled per tank and do the simple math. BFG's Ive had have been good til you get to about half tread on them then they lost a lot of their grip. I'll not go back for that very reason to them. I guess everyone's experiences will vary.

Well I stepped down in size (315 to 285) so I could try out the Toyo M-55s.

We shall see. I was going to stick with the Hankook DynaPro MTs (I really like them) but they are on backorder for 60days!

For those of you who love the BF Goodrich AT tires I have a question, whens the last time you bought a set? I put a brand new set on my Ram 2500 and I got 11k out of them before they melted off!! In my book only getting 6 months on a set of tires is shit to say the least!! I've got 10k on my Toyo Open Country AT'2 tires and they're only down 1/32 so far. A buddy is running the Cooper STT Pro tires on his Dodge 2500 and hes gotten 15k so far with only 2/32 worn off. I figure if it can survive a diesel its good to go

Did you check about warranty? Melting off after 10k or only lasting 6 months sounds fishy and if you drove normal I don't know a tire that wouldn't fall under warranty, I've put 60k+ on the ones I had on my 2003 dodge diesel but it has been a few years and my new used truck came with the General knock off which show zero wear after 10k and I'm impressed with these.

I used to make my living with wrenches and I can say that tire was known as a long wearing tire. A little outdated in modern times.

I just put a set of 255 85 16 Maxxis Bighorn MTs on my daily driver land cruiser. Love em so far not as noisy on the hwy as I expected either. Last month I put my second set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2s on my super duty. Great tires but as said earlier they do wear quicker on asphalt but are a fantastic all around tire.

I did check on the warranty for my tires. When they changed to the KO 2 tire they discontinued all mileage warranties. The only hard part of my driving is I have a diesel and tow heavy every week and run tons of gravel road on the weekends.

I also used to love the BF Goodrich tires, it wasn't uncommon to get 50k out of them on the crummy which was insane mileage. I think they new their reputation would carry them so they changed the tire compound, why else would they discontinue their mileage warranty?

I have had great luck with Yokohama AT-S tires. I have them on all of my rigs. I replaced the last set with 63,000 on them on my 1/2 ton. However, my friend only got a little more than 30,000 with them on his diesel.
