Use a heavy sock as a spotting scope cover.

We do something similar to pack the sat phone along. Phone goes into a quart sized ziploc, then into a single heavy hiking sock, then into a gallon ziplock then into the other sock. Protects the phone from water and breakage, and gives you a spare pair of emergency socks. The socks have only been busted out once, when our buddy got turned around in the dark and had to sleep in a tarp ovnight till it was light enough to see he was thrilled to have them...
