What is the best tikka t3 platform for a deer/speedgoat/elk rifle.
Alternatively, help me design an all around rifle. Lighter weight and saddle scabard concerns.

How much do you want to spend prior to optics? What kind of ranges do you realistically plan on shooting? Do you handload ? How light is light enough for you? Do you have any guns you would consider stripping for the action

All these things will help steer hou. If you want something 4.5-5.5 lbs you start spending $$$$$ per oz you shave. Conversely you can build something custom that is in the price range ish of a premium factory rifle if you are willing to be more of the 6-7 lb range.

Would like to come in under 3K but could be convinced to go higher.

Would like it to be 8.5 or less.
I handload.
Have a 280 ai (1400 rounds on the barrel) and a 300 wm ( 10 # scoped) on model 70 actions. Both shoot well.

No donar action unless I find a deal. Looking for a new project.

Perfect. You have a lot of options .

At your price range if you want to go Tikka , would reccomend considering a prefit 6.5 PRC or 7 SAUM proof carbon fiber barrel. They are $999 and weigh about 2.5 lbs.

can add a AG composites carbon fiber stock to it which is about 30 oz for probably about $600. No bedding should be required. Since everything is prefit shouldn’t really need much labor to assemble from a Smith and you should be good to go and around 6-7 lbs including action. Can probably buy a cheaper stainless Tikka 300 wsm , 300 win mag or 7 mm mag for the magnum bolt face and be GTG. Can make a few hundred back by selling barrel and stock.

I think this is likely about as good as you can get for the money. I doubt anything in the premium factory category such as Christensen, Weatherby, etc will shoot better and will be in that $2500-3000 ball park.

conversely …. Could buy something from Proof , Gun Werks, or another big box “custom” maker in the $3500-5500 range that may or may not shoot any better than above.

The other option would be a true custom build.
$700 for a proof barrel.
$600-1000 for a stock /bedding
$999 for stiller or up to $1800 for other brands (can save weight by going titanium at cost of $$$$) or $400 for Remington action and 300 to true action
$300-500 for chambering and threading
$200 for bottom medal
$200 for trigger tech trigger
Cerakote metal if desired for some money

benefit - possibly shoot better than Tikka semi custom build, also possible you get 1/2 to 1 Moa out of it still (still good of course) . Get to pick exact caliber

custom build with carbon fiber barrel and stock will come in at about 6-7 lbs ,maybe a little lighter depending on the exact stock and/or if you go titanium

There is no “best”. Best is what you hit the most with. What range are you legitimately looking to hunt to?

Range: Hunting 500 yds or so. Shooting quite a bit more.

Start with the bullet.

Since you’re wanting to shoot a lot and have terminal performance in the 500 yd’ish range it’d be really tough to look past a 143 eldx/147 eldm delivered out of a factory 6.5 CM. Factory stock. Vertical grip. Yo Dave trigger spring adjusted to your liking. Sportsmatch TO84 rings. SWFA 3-9 Milquad mil/mil. Cut the barrel to 20”. Add a can. Done.

For a weight reference I have a T3x with a 6.5 prc 22" proof sendero prefit in an allterra arms stock 13.5" LOP with a night force NX8 4-32x50 and it comes in at 8lbs 10oz. Do a leupold vx5 and you'll be under 8.5lbs easy 20210813_191559.jpg20210728_210009.jpg
I'm in the process of building another, this one will be a 6mm creedmoor. Bartlien #4 carbon fiber, manners EH Tikka stock. You can do a carbon fiber build for under $2500 pretty easy

That’s a lot of quality gun for that kind of money. I think you would struggle immensely to find a better gun off a shelf for that price

Looks like a MT bolt stem and outdoorsman knob, correct? Who did the bolt fluting? Looks cool.

There's plenty of great options out there cartridge wise, but I'm a huge fan of the short mags for their effortless accuracy and tunability.
My list would look like this:
Fast twist custom throated 7 saum/wsm, 270 wsm, 6.5 saum/prc

For an action the Defiance AnTi med length is about the best option out there for lightweight ss.
Mesa altitude stock
Triggertech special
20" #3 or 4 contour barrel, don't waste your money on CF wrapped.
If you plan on going suppressed you'll love the shorter barrel, I have a suppressed 16" 6.5 saum that sends 144 Bergers 2920 fps with exceptional accuracy.

What are we liking for cans for a Tikka?I’ve got a few set up similar to this between me and the kids and have looked into them a bit. Tbac ultra 5 looks good on paper but I’m open to suggestions.
thanks

PNWGATOR has the answer.
Hi Form,

What about the YoDave trigger spring included in PNWGATOR's list?

Do you see them as beneficial to T3xs and CTRs?

(I did use the search function, and couldn't see where you might have covered this before.)

Thanks again! :)

Iv’t used lots of T3’s with Yodave springs, including PNWGATOR’s.l- I do not use them in my rifles. T3’s with the Yodaves are light enough to cause problems in the winter with gloves and the factory trigger with the screw backed all the way out produces a 2.25-2.75 lb trigger which is about perfect, if not a bit light, for a field gun.
