Tikka rebarrel to 9.3x62

I went with McGowen. Sent them my left hand stainless Ruger 30-06 and they rebarreled it with a 22 inch tube. They only offer the 9.3x62 in a 1-12 twist but that is perfect IMO.
It will be awhile before I get a chance to shoot it as I have a couple of other rifles ahead of it that need glass bedding and loads worked up and sighted in. But I don't expect any feeding issues as I owned 9.3's in the past and never had any issues.
That's funny, my .35 Whelen started as a stainless Ruger MKII in .30-06. I had it rebarreled and chambered in .35 Whelen with a stainless Bevan King barrel. Hunted with it for a few years. It was always heavier then I liked but when I put a Nightforce SHV it pushed it over the edge weight wise. Then I found out on Rokslide that the barrel thread and pitch are the same on Tikka and Ruger with a slight tenon lenght difference. I pulled the barrel from the Ruger and had it screwed on a spare Tikka with minor chamber work. Saved a pound!

Are you concerned much with velocity loss? The bullets for those rifles don’t have great BCs.

You could always just rebore with JES. He does good work
Nosler 250 AB is 0.494, which you wouldn’t assume. If you reload, you can get it going at 2600ish, which yields equally surprising ballistics for an ancient cartridge designed to keep elephants and buffalo off the front lawn.

It’s been awhile since I’d looked at nosler. Can one even find nosler bullets in 358 these days? at a reasonably competitive price??

They still sell .358 and .366 bullets, though availability varies. Maybe Barnes, and Hornady too. Nothing seems competitively priced.

Just re checked. Nosler is still significantly more expensive in the 358 class than their competitors (accubond $86 for 50, partitions are more) , and they are still out of stock of partition and accubond in 358 (it’s been years now I believe). Barnes and Hornady are available, and have been. 🤷 I do wish nosler would start producing their 358 and 375 bullets again

@BlakeJ here is my project:

enjoy.

I'm wanting to put together a 18" threaded and suppressed 9.3x62 (maybe a 35 whelen, tough call). I'd like to rebarrel a tikka. Has anyone done this? Will any 30-06 or 270 tikka work? Any suggestions on barrel brands? Will any action work be needed for reliable feeding? Thanks!
How did this project turn out? I found a Tikka M690 in 9.3x62 and had it cut down to 20" and threaded. I probably should have gone for a shorter barrel (16-18"). I'm strongly considering getting it cut again. Care to share which powders are the most consistent out of your 18" barrel? How fast are you getting various bullets going?

I've heard that medium and large bores don't lose as much MV from going shorter. I don't know if that is true or not, but until someone makes a good .375 suppressor that only adds 4" to the length of the rifle, I think 20" is too long for the role I envision for this rifle (a heavy brute that hits hard).

Edit - everyone likes pictures. Here’s my M690:

It’s currently mounted with the SWFA 1-6x scope and .375 AB Raptor 10. The limbsaver is temporary. I ordered new stainless steel (cerakoted) bottom metal for it from PR Precision. I also ordered a wooden Rokstok for it. It’s pretty close to 11#, which is about the weight I want, but at 48 3/4” it’s too long.

i had a 300 win mag and a 9.3x62 tikka 690 with short barrels called the battue with battue sights. the 300 win mag was even worst with flame so check before starting to cut too short ... just my 2 cents on that.
