Tikka owners - 7mm rem mag recoil vs 30-06

I'm considering adding a Tikka 7mm Rem Mag to my collection. I've never shot a 7mm mag, but I have fired a Tikka in 30-06 shooting 150 grain Core-Lokts. Recoil was considerable but nothing crazy. How would recoil from common 7mm mag bullet weights compare?

Take the box listed velocity of those 30-06 loads (2910). Divide that number by the box listed velocity of 7mm mag Core Lokt 150gr (3111). Subtract from 1 and multiply by 100 (7). Recoil will be 7% more. This only works when comparing two of the same rifles.

I have superlites in both of those cartridges. Similar setups, maybe a couple ounces of weight difference with the 7mag being heavier. The 30-06 shooting 178grain bullets seems to beat me up more than the 7mag shooting 168grain bullets. I'm not sure why, but the 7mm is more comfortable for ME to shoot. Neither of them are uncomfortable and if you blindfolded me and handed me one to shoot, I probably couldn't tell you which it was based on recoil alone.

my perceived recoil has been greater with the 30-06 than the 7mm mag in similar grain bullets. in fairness, the -06's were all rem 700 rifles and 7mm a T3. i did have a limbsaver on the 7mm though.

fwiw, i no longer own any 30-06 chambered rifles. i own two 7mm mags.

I’ve owned both and there isn’t a lick of difference in recoil if you use the same weight for caliber bullets. They both have some snap but nothing that isn’t manageable. Now the Tikka T3 in 338 WM with hot loads will knock the snot out of you!

Not exactly what you're asking, but I have a custom 7mm rem mag - weighs 7.8lbs net of ammo, bipod and scope/rings, not a ton heavier than a factory Tikka stainless lite. I have a thunderbeast muzzle brake I've been using w/o the suppressor and recoil is very very tame. 26" barrel is about the only other difference vs factory tikka. My gunsmith did however say recoil was fairly sharp when he test fired it (without scope/brake/anything else with weight). I have a 3006 in a lighter rifle (factory rem 700 bdl) and recoil is quite uncomfortable, but that gun probably weighs less than 7 lbs scoped. Brakes work wonders if you're willing to add one.

I’ve owned both and I think the 7mm is easier to manage. 30-06 seemed to jump more. 6.5 is way better and kills elk plenty dead.

Thanks for all the input. I have thought about ways of making the gun a little heavier - a Bell and Carlson stock adds about 6 ounces or so from what I hear, and I am planning to add a heavier scope (a 20 oz SWFA). I know Rokslide is all about the lightweight rifles, but I've been thinking a 7mm mag could be a good addition to my gun safe and would like to make it more manageable for me.

That 6.5 PRC seems pretty interesting!

Bump. Considering a T3x in 30-06 and curious about recoil. Already have T3x's in 223 and 6.5

T3 30-06 with 180gr bullets over a max load of ramshot hunter were going 2800fps, and the recoil as pretty sharp. At the end of the day I settled on a tikka in 270win as my light weight do all rifle. I haven’t found anything that a 150gr partition won’t kill. And even with max loads the recoil is noticeablely less than the 30-06

Good feedback. Thanks

I have a T3x .30-06 that weighs 7.9 lb scoped. It was not fun for me to shoot at the range with any bullet weight. I added a limbsaver and witt machine slip on muzzle brake at the same time, and now it's a breeze to shoot. The limbsaver is a huge upgrade compared to the factory recoil pad, so I'd start there

Not to sidetrack thread, but I own a Remington 7600 carbine pump in .30-06 with the plastic butt plate. Was thinking of picking up a Tikka in .30-06 and adding a Limbsaver. 7600 is heavier and T3x is lighter. Think I'd notice much difference between the two in terms of recoil?
