Excuse my crude phone drawing but id be sold on a design with the level in the bottom left like this.
I agree in theory, the reason I use the top cap is it’s nice to have a little adjustment on the level to accommodate differences in rifle actions. Not such a big deal on Tikkas, but on Remington you’ll sometimes find the holes 5 degrees off top dead center due to their manufacturing processes.
There are also a lot of people that like to set their crosshairs by their natural cant. So they throw the gun up to their shoulder and have the guy behind the counter twist it until it looks right…
