I bought a take off 1-8” stainless .223 Tikka barrel from Wind Gypsy to trade with Blue Lightning, my 1-10”. All the other Tikkas I load for are 1-8” that shoot 75 ELDM very, very well so I’m getting away from 50 gr BTs. The 1-8” will shoot 50s but the 1-10” doesn’t like the 75s.

Took the rifle and barrel to a gunsmith, first question he asked was how old was the T3? Evidently the older ones screwed the barrel on with the strength of Thor and mine was no exception. He warned me about maybe needing to make a relief cut in the existing barrel so I was prepared not to re-use the barrel. No worries.

On the way home I found a roadkill mink.

Looks like head damage only. I brought him home and stuck him in the freezer for a friend of mine. Back to the story.

After a thorough cleaning I chambered a few rounds of “Kyle,” my 75 gr ELDM load that I use in Varmint Cong, my stainless T3 Varmint. Kyle is 1.940” BTO, about .002” off the lands, so I didn’t know if it would chamber. It did, almost exactly the same chamber dimensions.

Kyle uses a max (per Hodgdon) charge of Benchmark. Their test barrel is 1-12” at 24 inches, top velocity was 2829. I fired three rounds over the Magnetospeed Sporter and got an average of 2836, ES of 26. Brass looked good. CCI400 primers are a little soft but that’s what I have. Three rounds won’t tell the whole story but it’s a start.

I get 2915 from Kyle in Varmint Cong, but VC’s barrel is and inch longer. I’m not gonna argue over 79 fps. Both loads are over 1800 fps at 600 yards, which is my max for deer anyway.

My other 75 ELDM load is Carlos, using Varget. I’m right at 2900 but it’s also a stainless Varmint with a longer barrel.

Next step is a range session to see how she likes either one.

Kyle and Carlos... I've never heard anyone name their hand loads lol. Congrats on the mink. I also have an older T3 I'll be rebarrelling, good to know I might lose the original

I'm about to rebarrel another older T3 and they are definitely snug! The last one i did, I followed some advice i had seen somewhere and soaked it for a few days with Blasters penetrating oil. I tightened it down in my vise and then put the vise in a hydraulic press. With a little preload on the outside action wrench, I rapped it (the wrench handle) good with a rubber mallet and it spun free like i knowed wut i was doin'.

This is how you write up a story. Random roadkill pelts and names for your loads!

I havent tried benchmark in .223 yet. Do you like it over varget? How temp sensitive is it? There always seems to be some hanging around bass pro and I believe it's cheaper than the Hodgdon extreme line.

Impact is the key imho, I took a T3 barrel off no problem with a homemade external action wrench and some whacks with a deadblow hammer. No huge cheater bars or such.

Meters like a dream. No compression issues like a full case of Varget. Temperature stable, it’s one of Hodgdon’s temp stable powders.

I didn't think it was so that's great to know. Never researched it much because varget has worked so well but stuffing 24+gr of it in a case gets a little inconsistent in terms of seating depth in my experience.

Max charge according to Hodgdon is 25 grains. It shows as compressed. I load really long but I still get a little crunch.

Hitting the range today to see how Blue Lightning likes Kyle. I rolled up some Carlos also, and even some Carlos (1.915”) at Kyle BTO (1.940”).

I chronoed Carlos and Long Carlos just to get an idea of velocity, two shots each. Kyle was 2836, Carlos was 2853, and Long Carlos was 2892. No pressure signs.

Range day results, BL didn’t care much for Carlos, but liked Long Carlos and really liked Kyle. Eight-shot group went a hair under 0.7”, which is good enough for the girls I go out with.

Varmint Cong shoots Kyle a little better, but not much, and the brass is interchangeable between them. One load, two rifles, not bad.

Shooting the skinny gong at 210 yards, no misses. Pretty good for me.
