Thoughts on implementing thread locking on idle threads after a standard period.

I don't remember another year where I have seen so many 5+ year old threads being revived (mostly by FNGs). I would love to see threads getting locked for further replies after a set time of no activity. Wouldn't be a perfect system, but what are everyone's thoughts on locking all threads without new activity after 2 years. I landed on 2 years just because I feel with how quickly hunting changes in the west and north (my hunting focus areas), 2 years is about thee relevant period. Would also help prevent googlers getting updated info with zero effort. Look forward to everyone's thoughts.

Moreover, I’d love to see any classified ad marked SOLD after a month of inactivity. I hate clicking an open ad just to find the OP wrote “sold” instead of properly closing it.

I’m a member of a Can Am UTV forum and it locks down inactive threads just as you explained, but sooner. Probably a year?

Nothing worse than a 10+ year old zombie thread being brought up from the dead and guys responding as if it’s a new thread.

Classifieds are already cluttered and here’s a fix….

Any classified thread that hits 30 days automatically migrated into a crusty gear for sale subforum. Nothing more annoying than guys bumping their over priced crap day after day for months.

I like preventing googlers from getting updated info with zero effort. I don’t like folks posting questions, then everyone pooping on them, mentioning it’s already been asked and to search the forum. Or the FNG’s using it to get to the 10 posts to their advantage. The lesser of the two evils would be preventing the googlers. In my perfect world it would be would to prevent googlers and up the FNG’s to say some arbitrary number of 50 in my mind.

On the classifieds front; I'm on a couple of other forums, one in particular that automatically deletes ALL classified ads after 30 days of being posted. Regardless of the last post date. Very occasionally it costs someone a sale or purchase, but it's so rare that nobody really complains. It saves a BUNCH of server space & has massively cut down on the scamming.

Theres the guys who bump their 3 month old post daily..... then theres the dude who lists each item individually and bumps them daily for 6 to 12 months. They deserve a shame subforum

If you guys stopped staring at the new posts feed (or checked it constantly ), it probably would not bother you so much when someone revives an old thread or bumps his classified ad up for the 47th consecutive day.

This thread is like the WKR version of the “why do I need 10 posts to see the classifieds?”

we already chastise FNG's for not using the search function enough for redundant or repetitive topics, the fact that old threads get revived tells me many actually are using it. Take that away and the traffic on the same nonsense multiplies so which is going to irritate you more? The same questions by new guys over and over, or old threads getting revived regarding said questions?

The point of NOT auto locking threads would be to bump a thread that thoroughly covers a topic or needs additional input. A lot of times a topic is thoroughly covered and a good thread should be resurrected if someone has more questions or information to be added

100% disagree with locking old conversational posts. There is plenty of value is someone asking questions, making points, or updating information in an old post.

There have been a number of times I've been introduced to a new topic and new info by someone asking a question in an ancient post they clearly searched for, and read through. Stuff I just wouldn't have come across otherwise, as I wasn't searching for that specific info. But it was beneficial to me.

There was a thread recently on MM in the Arizona sub-forum where some guy resurrected a thread asking the OP how his hunt went. The thread was 16 years old!!! Then the person gets offended when it’s pointed out.

Obviously people do a Google search, find the thread and reply without glancing at the OP date. If I find a thread in this manner I always look at the date. 99% chance it’s an old thread.

There is a difference between bumping a 3 year old thread by a FNG to make a comment like "I couldn't agree more." Or engaging in the thread as if its current.

However, sometimes I use the search function to find information im looking for on the forum and find an old thread. If my question isnt answered, I will bump the thread with a disclaimer that, I know the thread is old, but I know my question pertaining to this topic belongs in this thread that already has a ton of information on said topic.

I view this forum like an archive and can answer most of my questions without asking it. But I think there is value to adding to older threads that have a ton of good information.

So long story short, no I dont think we should lock old threads.

joke aside, i think overall i am in favor of this
