Just wondering if this is reasonable for drawing any species in a couple of years.. applying in all other states but now considering az as well. 33 years old. Am I waisting money

you can draw in a couple years, it all depends on quality and how much time you are willing to put in. That goes for every state.

since you have to buy the license to buy points you might as well put in for more than one specie since i think its 12 dollars for each

Yes in 8 years. I grew up there and still hunt all the time. 8 will get you into a good unit. Not a premium one but a solid unit for sure.

Are you talking rifle or Archery? If you are talking late Rifle, you can go hunting probably every 3-5 years on average. Between me and my hunting partner, we have over 15 guys that apply from ND and we have hunted late bulls every year for the last 6 years. Someone always gets a tag, and one guy has had 3 in 6 years. Good unit, right on the edge being considered a Premium trophy unit. Success rate for us is about 90% on the hunt with 100% opportunity on bulls. Best bull killed so far is in the 330" range with one of the guys screwing up on a 370" and 350" in the same hunt.

Archery is a different story, grab a snickers, it is going to be a while. The unit we hunt takes 12 points b4 a non-res has a chance to draw. All the bonus tags take up the 10% cap on Non-res. In 2016, our structure is said to change, and the odds for a non-res without max points goes up fractionally. Let me know if you have any questions, I would gladly help you.

This is the first year in AZ i have put in for points and going to continue, but how long does it usually take to hunt unit 27 late rifle.

My standards are 300-330 elk and a 160-170 Mule Deer. If I were to get a opportunity at them Id most lkely apply

I think the general thought by the guys in the know on these states draws is; Do your own research.

There is a lot of competition and its worth looking that stuff over anyway as you might find a wormhole...for example, I hunted Az archery bull tag two years in row as a non resident.

when you look over the odds sheet in the regs you find stuff like this;

2014 Applicants for unit 1 Bow elk, 5088 avail non res tags 30

Applicants for Unit 9 bow elk, 3555, avail tags 10

plus there could be changes on the horizon cutting those non res tags in half [in the bonus round draw]

but this is why everyone wants to go....2013 archery bull [sorry for the poor quality pic- rained most of the trip soggy camera]

I am sitting at 14 pts for elk this year, its starting to look good. I feel start applying for every state and every species you ever want to hunt. For the most part you will be glad you did.

DIY, start getting points! With those standards you will be fine and can draw units that have those kinds of animals in 5-7 years. Az is about to change how non res get tags so even in premium units that usually fill with max pt holders, there will be non max holders drawing. It's not a done deal yet as all the particulars haven't been figured out yet. You can't win if you don't play amigo!!!
