Tons of stuff to do. Rafting on the Payette, Fly fishing the SF of the Boise. ^McCall has great scenery and lots of stuff to do in the outdoors. The amount people up there suck and the drive is no longer beautiful but rather miserable and clogged up with traffic and road construction.

Southern and central Idaho are extra crispy this summer, with fires already going strong not too far from Boise. I would expect some significant smoke to be hanging in most areas by late August. I sure hope I'm wrong.

An easy activity near downtown is floating the Boise River from Barber Park to Ann Morrrison Park. Tubes can be rented at Barber Park. About a 3 hour float and pretty fun for all ages. There are pretty good restaurants downtown Boise. Hiking trails near downtown in the foothills are good for early morning. Renting bikes and doing ride on the “greenbelt” (bike path along River) would be fun.

South Fork of the Payette full-day rafting trip is pretty fun. The water might be a little skinny in August, but its still a unique and worthwhile adventure. Early June is a hoot!

I'd hire a guide from Idaho Angler and go fish the Owyhee river for a day. Great Brown trout fishery. Can DIY but fish are finicky and guide will help put you on fish.

SF Boise river flows will be wadable at the end of August. Shoot me a PM, and I'll be happy to get you lined out on what gear to bring or where you can rent it. If my work schedule allows, I might be able to join you out there.

If you don't mind crowds and want easy-to-catch fish, you can hit the Owyhee just on the other side of the Oregon border. In my opinion, an experienced angler doesn't need a guide on this water.

be prepared for combat fishing on the Owyhee- but I agree no need for a guide there and the fishing has been good
