Some recovered bullets over the years. From left to right...
.270 win, 140g accubond thru whitetail
shoulders 250 yds
.300 win, 180g accubonds from a couple elk
.300 win, 200g accubond from a proud bull
moose at 60 yds quartering away.
.338 win, 200g accubond from my elk this year.
3060 fps at muzzle, 150 yd shot slightly
quartering to, stayed off the shoulder and
went for the ribs. Still thinking on that one
.338 win, 225g speer grand slams from 4 elk.
Loved that bullet but was discontinued.
Guess you'd say BC was shit compared to the
fancy stuff offered today, but they killed like
Thors hammer and wouldn't explode on
bone. One of those nice mushrooms hit a
bull at 250 yds quartering to. Went thru the
shoulder bone between the upper and lower
joints, through the top of heart, lungs and
was laying under the far side hide. Crushed
him.

I've noticed that accubonds hit hard, but do have more of a tendency to want to shear once there into the solid portion of the shank.

2nd Buck. Approx 180-200 Lbs I'd say. Just comparing it to my own size of 225-235Lbs.
.30-30 Federal Premium Trophy Copper 150gr Roundnose Polymer tip.
out of a Marlin 336 GBL

I figure about 24" of penetration!
Entered just below last rib on left side, so thru diaphragm, silver-dollar sized hole thru liver, RHS lung destroyed, and it came to rest just under the hide, just under the RHS Scapula. At about 25yds away. While he was trotting away crossing a large clearing I was facing, because the chic he was chasing had just crossed that gap a moment ago and woke me up from my slipping into a mini-nap in that high heat that morning of 90F already at 8:30am.

Here's a couple hammers a buddy pulled out of Sitka blacktails. .308 199gr. Shots weren't far. The barrel is a 9 twist. But it was pretty cold and low elevation

The shots weren't very far, and didn't exit the animal with the minimal expansion shown?

What was the shot angle? Broadside, Texas heart shot, diagonal from shoulder to rear quarter, etc.

I can see how they may have tumbled inside the animal for various reasons, however my initial thought is why was there nada for expansion upon impact?

Not looking for an answer from you, just thinking out loud. In general that's not something seen with a game bullet.

There could be lots of potential reasons why they didn't expand. I've had it happen with bergers a time or two. I don't think its a desirable trait for a hunting bullet. I know some people like it for subsonic work but I don't do that. I want my bullets to expand consistently EVERY time I put one in a critter.

Could have been marginally stable even though he used a 9t barrel. Low altitude and cold temps wouldn't help that. Maybe they need more twist than Hammer says.

Might have hit a tiny stick or something right before the deer. But the odds of that happening twice in a couple days arent good. The bottom bullet looks like it did start to expand but stopped.

They were launched from a 300 win mag so at the 250ish yards it would have been going plenty fast enough to expand.

For me that bullet wouldn't be one I'd consider burning powder under and shooting at game. Never had an issue with the original Barnes X 25 years ago, and no issues with the TSX or the TTSX. However, a dead animal is the desired result so the bullets didn't fail in that respect. But nil for expansion is hard to swallow. It's nothing on the people using them, but there's something wrong with them being made especially with two of them that close together.

.277 130gr TTSX. 200yard shot on a mule deer buck. Impact velocity roughly 2500-2600fps. Quartered away shot. Bullet hit mid-body and came to rest under the hide in the forward part of the far shoulder.

There isn't a better looking mushroom than that. Frontal diameter to match any lead core bullet, bonded or otherwise, with 100% weight retention.

I got on the Barnes X bullet train back in the mid 1990s. Used the TSX for a few years then the TTSX came out. 270 Win, 284 Win, '06, 300 Win, 35 Whelen AI. I go light for caliber with them. As these pictures from multiple users show, they don't lose weight and consistently expand.

They make a long and consistent wound channel that has the best opportunity for the wound channel to coincide with the vitals from even strong quartering angles. My goal is to have the most opportunity to take an ethical shot and I feel the Barnes bullets give the best opportunity.

New season, new pile of recovered bullets to post boys. Let's go!
This is a .277 140gr accubond recovered from under the hide on the offside shoulder of this year's bull elk. About 2875 fps, 270 win. 50 yard shot. The other bullet passed through. Weighs 95grs.

I've seen this before with hammers marginally twisted dug out of sand backstop. Hammers that I have dug up with 1" or more over minimum twist rate always shed their nose and drive the shank deep.
I shot my buck this year with 300wm 1:8 199hh 3150fps 300yrds quartering away bullet entering ribs exiting far side shoulder blade. Shank left an extra large 2-3" exit hole, along with 4 smaller exits from nose petals.
My .02, drive lighter hammers fast with plenty of twist (as prescribed by hammer) and that will not happen.
214hh 3075 mv min twist 100yrds into sand (top)
199hh 3150mv 1.25 over min twist(bottom)

Accubonds look great, good shooting!

Been reading on the hammers, looks like a main feature of the design has less bearing surface fully engraved by the rifling because of the parabolic design from shoulder to boat tail. Meaning somewhere in the middle of the shank is the "high point" and it's tapering down to the nose into the boat tail from that point. Am I correct?

Nice velocity listed above with the 300 Win Mag (300 wm) and the heavy bullets. A 199 gr bullet at 3150fps? Am I reading what you wrote correctly? Apologies if I'm way off, just not familiar with the hammer line of bullets in terms of how they might be able to accomplish that.

Yes that is correct velocity (labradar), my rifle is throated long so not a fair comparison to sammi chambered rifle. 199hh, R26 gets about 3225 before ejector swipe with peterson brass
