The Teratorn: A Shoot2Hunt X EXO Bag Collab

Mine just showed up, super excited to get it out but I've got another month of salmon guiding before I'll have enough time to do much more than some short hikes. Initial impression is great. A heads up for anyone ordering from Canada your going to get unwanted penetration when it crosses the border, which being made in USA I was expecting but $240 of taxes, brokerage and tariffs on a $600 bag is pretty big kick in the shorts. Going to need to switch from Charters to hooking to support my gear habit at this rate. Saying that for anyone on the fence Id order it again, great mix of exo quality and thoughtful design with room for the bulky and often wet stuff needed for Canadian and Alaskan climates.

For those that have used the pack with the wings tucked away (think day hunts), how does that change where you strategically put your gear to still gain the benefit of efficiently getting to your gear?

Also any pictures of the pack in day hunt mode would be appreciated

Put the teratorn to use doing some positional shooting in the hills today. Tried it with the wings tucked behind the frame for the first time and was pleasantly surprised how smooth that worked. In this configuration I still like it substantially better than my 5000 bag, mostly because the layout is far more functional and no need to release straps to get at most things.

I recently returned to the 5000 bag in an attempt to be more streamlined on a 3 day backpacking/fishing trip and every time I packed it up I was cursing the vertical side pockets and wishing I had just used the teratorn and cinched it down. The 5000 is a good bag, but functionally it performs like a much smaller bag when loaded full because the side pockets intrude so much on the main bag.

With the wings tucked away, for a day hunt, do you see yourself needing to use the main compartment at all?

I think it would depend a bit on season and type of hunting, but I think it’s certainly possible, especially in warmer weather. For example, if you didn’t need many clothing layers, I think you could easily carry 15x binos in the lid, then a rain jacket, warmer layer, hat/gloves and lunch food in the sleeping bag compartment, then use the hip pouches for snacks/accessories. Rifle on one side, tripod on the other. Hiking poles in the dedicated loops. Molinator just as I have it. Sit pad between the pack and frame.

I think that would work just fine the more I think about it, then when it gets cold, bring out the wings for the warmer puffy layers.

Round 4 shooting off the bag.
I have shot off my 3600 and 5000 EXO bags before so I have a good idea how they worked so this was just shooting from the TT.

I don’t do much prone shooting due to brush but it can happen and my wife took a cow shooting off my 3600 so it’s still valuable to practice.

Mounting a shooting bag to a pack is something that I have not done or even packed before, but with the shock cord on the upper main section it’s easy to stuff it in there. I am using the Molinator Heavy Bag(MHB).

At first with my pack being in day-hunt mode the bag was a little too low to get a good position. I thought about removing my first need items out of the lower main section and put them in the upper main section to fill some internal pack volume but instead, I took my sit pad and stuffed it under the MHB. This provided enough height increase to make a much better platform.

In day-hunt mode the upper main section only has my “possibles pouch”in it so it’s basically empty, if I did have additional gear in there the sit pad would not be needed but I don’t want to add internal volume filler for no reason or loose easy access to first need items.

At home, I secured the MHB to my K4/5000 using the dedicated horizontal straps and it worked without any issues. I stuffed my sit pad under the MHB for comparison and it would work but I would not leave the pad under there and hike with it as it’s not as secure as under the shock cord of the TT.

I used a scoped chassis rifle and an iron sighted muzzle loader for this round and I would say, if easy access to gear is not a high priority to you, then from a shear shooting platform performance, one could call the round a draw but for me the TT with the MHB and that ******* simple shock cord was easier to get setup, more secure and still gives better access to gear so the TT takes this round 10-9.

How does the bag do vertically as a shooting support?

I find with my SG Sky 5900 I have to hold the bag to keep it from tipping over because it just will not stand up on its own no matter how I pack it. Always wants to tip over forward.

I would think this is common among all bags, my Kuiu is the same way. I set it up so it want to wall into to keep vs away

No bag that I’ve ever used stays up on its own particularly well.

The Teratorn is like any other pack for shooting off of. Very effective.

I am between frame sizes and purposely got the taller frame for upright pack shooting.

I use the grab handle and hold it with three fingers, and the other two help stabilize the forend for bolt cycling. I then adjust for elevation by pushing or pulling the pack. For me, EXO's grab handle is in the perfect location, as I could not do this as easily with other packs.

Another great idea, positive control of the rifle is something I struggle with in that position.

Planning to check the bag out tomorrow in store.

Fall into you vs away I assume? Why have I never thought of that.
Depends on the terrain and what the pack lets me get away with/aids in the position.

The off hand is still nearly always in the same general position controlling the butt stock of the gun.

Here’s a screen shot from a video shooting kneeling timed shots up at a steep angle target.

As an example…

Curious why you’d go kneeing there vs seated? Seems like the backpack controls the rear height and seated I’d think would be more steady?

I prefer seated in general. Just practicing and messing around with positions there.

Main point being, the off hand position doesn’t really change. Prone, seated, kneeling, etc.
