I don’t think 5.56 is some magically hard to suppress round. It is they are normally on AR platforms with short barrels.

Put them in bolt gun and supressor values should be just as good as they are for larger calibers.

Just cross reference some of the muzzle vs SE numbers on the bolt guns and use that as the basis for the SE numbers on a bolt action .223. The muzzle numbers should be similar regardless of action type so It will get you close enough to have an idea
That is what I was doing, wasn't sure if it was the right approach. If so the wolf hunter 6mm looks really damn appealing for a 223/6mm gun. In the 556 test its muzzle numbers run with the Nomad Ti XC / L Ti XC (which at 30cal aren't optimized for 556) which in turn in the 30cal run with the Enticer LTi and edge out the enticer STi.

Folks have been talking it up as being a nice optimized package 6mm and lower but its nice seeing some data.

Its the dynamics of a gas system that makes ar15 and similar systems hard to suppress, not the cartridge as you point out.

With an ar15, the gas system and having the added element of the ejection port where the gas system feeds into creates a host that's much harder to suppress than a bolt gun. "Port pop" is certainly real, and the best you will likely do to suppress an ar15 is in the 140's dB wise.

A bolt action rifle in .223 with a large volume can (like a TBAC .338 ultra) will likely meter in the high 120's at the muzzle.

It's not the cartridge.

Not necessarily. The CAT WB performs amazingly on a 11.5" 556 gas gun. Id venture to guess its below 140db, depending on the environment i dont need ear pro with supers and its zero gas to the face.

This is a cool summit/test but theres a lot of cans id have loved to have seen them test(scythe, other CAT cans)

So stupid question ultimately what columns should we pay attention too? Ive been eyeing a hunting only can but looking at the se readings for my explorr 30 and the results they got last year for the size and weight its tough to tell if something else would be worth the step up. (to be fair I cant tell if the explorr they had was a gen 1 or 2 ) would be going on a 6.5prc

I wouldn't be too concerned about any absolute numbers, and whether a specific number is dB or dBA.

Instead, use it in a comparative manner to any other can on that list, using either SE dB or SE dBA, just be consistent on which one of the two you use when comparing.

Moving to a 6.5 bore hydrogen / TBAC would probably give you a decent improvement.

For its size, heck, regardless of size the Dead Air Nomad LTi just never ceases to impress. I've been waiting for DE to get their new 3D XC version out and maybe I should be looking for one of their older LTi models instead.

so, out of a 20" barreled 308 Winchester bolt action w/ a SC backcountry suppressor, how many shots can I fire w/o any hearing protection at the range and not have to worry about hearing damage? would it be OK to hunt w/o hearing protection? that data table is downright confusing. besides the 30 caliber SC banish backcountry im also getting a SC 46 for larger bore rifles.

The generally accepted limit for immediate damage is 140 db. 130db gets you 10 shots per day, 120 gets you 100 and 110 gets you 1000. Most good bolt gun cans get you under 140 and maybe under 130. Db is actual pressure waves dbA is a weighting that is said to more closely mimic what the human ear hears. I don’t know enough to know which is a better metric.

DbA for absolute decibels, and the impulse number. Can also look at the peak wave and see how quickly it settles out. If length is not a concern the Magnus is great. I have it, Magnus S, and after reading through the dayabi ordered the Nomad Ti XC. The Nomad Ti appeared to be the equivalent to and Ultra 9, but 2.5” shorter and lighter.

Hydrogen L reads to be a great can, but I know they usually run higher back pressures. My CAT is 3D printed so I figured why not give Dead Air a chance on their 3D printed can. I think if it’s hunting only, you need to decide which measurable is most important, length vs weight and then look at decibels/impulse that line up.
