Cindy's Quiver - TightSpot

Over the course of the past few years, TightSpot has taken quivers to the next level. The TightSpot quiver fits tight to the bow, allows you to adjust the balance of the bow and has adjustable grippers to insure your arrows will be held tight. TightSpot has quickly become known as one of the leaders in innovative quiver design.

I contacted Joe Jacks, President of TightSpot regarding the Project. Joe really liked the Project and agreed to sponsor the project by supplying Cindy with a quiver for her bow.

I would really like to thank Joe Jacks and TightSpot for sponsoring the Project.

Boone & Crockett Scoring

David has had me do some reading on the B&C scoring system. Here’s a quick summary...TINE LENGTH, TINE LENGTH & TINE LENGTH. Just kidding! ;) There's actually a lot more to it.

1) The B&C system rewards 3 main characteristics- long tines, mass and symmetry.
2) The B&C scoring system is based on the deer's typical frame.
3) 19 total measurements make up the typical frame score-10 tine length measurements, 8 mass measurements and the inside spread of the main beam.
4) Nine measurements are taken on each antler. Five tine length measurements known as the G1,G2, G3, G4 and main beams and four circumference measurements known as H1, H2, H3, and H4.
5) When people are talking B&C scores, you will often hear both gross and net scores. Gross score meaning no deductions for symmetry, while net score is with the deductions taken into account.
6) Differences in measurements from side to side, along with the length of any non-typical points are deducted resulting in the typical frame net B&C score.
7) Non-typicals are scored the exact same way except the non-typical points are added to the net typical frame, rather than deducted.
8) The awards book (published every 3 years) has a minimum entry score of 180 for typicals and 215 for non-typicals.
9) The all-time records book (published every 6 years) has a minimum score of 190 for typicals and 230 for non-typicals.
10) All B&C minimum scores are based on net scores.

For more detailed information, scoring sheets and illustrations of tine length and circumference measurement points see David’s book Public Land Mulies pages 32-37.

On this hunt, I will stalk the biggest buck I see each day regardless of it’s size. Experience, experience, experience! :D

Field judging is next, so stay tuned.

So Cindy made the trip up to visit Robby, and he got some good accurate numbers. I've worked with those numbers and Cindy has them waiting in her Inbox to check out tonight. I will call her this evening and we will run through them as there is a ton of information there and I don't want her to feel overloaded and overthink this whole thing. Anybody can do this with the right knowledge. With Cindy's attitude and drive....watch out! :)

Cindy has been doing Crossfit for awhile. I feel this is a great workout. To this point I have asked her to continue that and start adding in some hiking trips with a weighted pack. We will start doing more core and leg work, while mixing in more interval work. We will discuss this tonight!

Cindy's Release!: Carter Enterprises "HONEY"

attachment.php

attachment.php

I feel that this release will help Cindy develop proper shooting form and learn to execute her shots subconsciously without having to think about pulling a trigger. In my opinion this is critical to her development as an excellent shooter. There are some drawbacks to using a hand-held, hinge style release for hunting - primarily in she will not have instantaneous control over the shot. However, I feel that for a new shooter the advantages gained in accelerating her learning curve and beating any and all possibilities of target panic right out of the gate far outweigh this. The other potential threat is the possibility of losing the release since it's not attached to her wrist. We'll combat this by drilling the handle and making a simple lanyard.

I'm very confident that Cindy will make rapid progress and build a solid foundation for her shooting by learning to properly use this style of release. It will also open the door to use virtually any release down the road that she chooses and increase her ability to make transitions other releases much more smoothly. I've started other new shooters off in this manner and have seen excellent progress and long-term success with these students.

Cindy and I will get a plan together for meeting in the next two weeks to spend a full day learning all the fundamentals of archery form and shot execution. Meanwhile, she will be in good hands getting a crash course from Evan this weekend. Looking forward to hearing from you soon Cindy!

Thanks to Carter Enterprises and Forrest Carter for becoming an official sponsor of the Mule Deer Project!

It is so exciting to see all these things coming together for Cindy! I think all of us feel like we are with you every step of the way as you are preparing for this incredible adventure. It is so fun to watch the progress you are making. I also think all of us "roksliders" want to be there to experience this hunt with you. But since hundreds of people can't silently trail behind you single file on this amazing journey you will be taking soon....we are going to need a DVD of the entire adventure. I am so excited for you! :)

Cindy's Bow Case - Tenzing SB39 Soft Case

Jay Robert with Tenzing was at my house a few days ago to discuss packs. During his stay, I told him about the Project. Jay immediately expressed an interest in supplying Cindy with a bow case for her new bow.

The bow cases are currently being manufactured and as soon as they are completed, Cindy will have one on her front step.

I would really like to thank Jay Robert and Tenzing for sponsoring the project with a bow case.

Sorry that its been a while since i weighed in all!!! Launch got the arrows over to me Thursday and as I have been out fighting a cold the last 3 days I now have them finished.

I will be meeting with Cindy and David in ... 6 hours and 27 minutes to build her a new bow and get her shooting up and running.

I will go into vane selection tomorrow night. We have a big day tomorrow and Sunday I am headed up the mountain with a buddy to scout for his Big Horn tag.

We just finished up at Bill Pellegrinos Archery Hut in Colorado Springs. Evan spent three hours with Cindy rigging up her bow. Cindy is currently on her way home with her bow.

A big thanks to Evan for devoting so much time to us this morning. I would also like to thank Bill Pellegrino for letting us take over his archery shop for a few hours.

I will get the video I took today up as soon as I can.

This is awesome, I agree that this project should be video journal, and a DVD released at the end. Way to go to all of the sponsors stepping up, and good luck to you Cindy.

Evan,

Yes I think you should be sporting a PINK Rokslide T-shirt next time!;)

Thanks to you for explaining so well what the back tension was, how it works and how to go about accomplishing what we needed to. I have SUCH a long way to go but feel like we've got a good start.

It really was fun to watch you throw all those accessories on the bow and tune it the way you did! Cool stuff. Thanks.

Cindy….glad to hear the Kenetreks showed up. Before wearing them for the first time, I would recommend applying the waterproofing wax that Kenetrek includes with the boots. It is really easy.

  • Remove laces from boots
  • Apply the wax with a clean cotton rag ( be sure to apply a little pressure to ensure the wax gets into all creases)
  • After wax has been applied to all areas of the boots, let them set for 10 minutes
  • Wipe off excess wax with clean rag
  • Re-install laces
The Kenetrek Mountain Extremes offer an unbelievable amount of support which you will be thankful for when side-hilling or packing out a heavy load. They do, however, require a break-in period. I would highly recommend putting a minimum of 50 miles on them prior to your first backcountry trip with them.
