The Beer Thread

I like Torpedo too, but New Belgium's Ranger is my favorite IPA right now, and newly available in a can...

A lot of breweries are going to canning beers. I don't know if its cheaper but a lot do it because its easier to recycle thus better for the environment. I would look at your local specialty beer/wine store and see what they have. If they don't have anything ask them what their distributors have available. Here in MT we have a ton of breweries canning. Two of then right up in Bitterroot Bulls neck of the woods. BB, I don't know why you're wasting your time with Ranger when you can drink Doublehaul and Bitterroot brewing beers. I'm just kidding. That new one in Stevi wasn't spectacular but I had it at a beerfest and I was several beers in so my judgment may have been a little...flawed.

As to the canning question, it almost seems like most new breweries are canning right off the bat instead of bottling. I just named three breweries within a short distance of missoula that can. There is one outside of great falls, one in Bozeman, Big Sky brewing as mentioned by someone else....I would be surprised if you didn't have some local places canning where you live.

Brewers are getting much better seals with cans vs. bottles. Less air pollution when it gets to the customer. Also, light pollution is not a problem with cans.

Great info! Looks like I have a new mission.

How about wine for my wife?

Bota box makes some pretty decent box wine...I like their Redvolution blend, Malbec and Pinot Grigio.

Or you can buy some of these platypus wine preservation bags and pour her favorite vintage in with a funnel: http://www.amazon.com/Platypus-PlatyPreserve-Wine-Preservation-System/dp/B001OGZ6EY
We have been using the platypus preserve bags to carry rum and vodka ( I mix with flavored drink mixes to make cocktails in the field) in on backpack trips since 2012, and I have been very impressed with their durability.

I like Ranger better than Doublehaul, but Kettlehouse has the king of canned Scotch Ales... Cold Smoke! Bitterroot Brewing has excellent beers all around, including the IPA, but no cans that I have seen. I love the big bottles though.

Cold Smoke is the king of canned scotch ales for sure. It is my favorite by far.

They are making 6 pack cans from Bitterroot now. We have them down in Bzm. The nut brown, sawtooth and the ipa. Cold smoke is definitely king. However had some cold smoke aged in a bourbon barrel they made and it was horrible. They also had a mint julep double haul that was one if the best ipa's I've had. Best brewery in Missoula, though, is Draught Works. If you haven't been there check it out. No canning or bottling there though.
