The 6UM

ya, I just don't have the five days to get up there for the school. Plus Ryan and Jake make me feel small, outdated, irrelevant. Hoping the 6um gets me in with the cool kids but already feeling the shade for shooting a non-drop-tested swaro'. Everyone pray for me please:LOL:
Oh it’s been drop tested all right.
You’re pretty much fugged 💁🏻‍♂️

yes, that's the scope on my 270WSM last 3 seasons (but holding "hunting" zero for me)

*edit: mine is the 42mm, not 50.

I thought Ryan said it's the new 2.5-10 that is in testing now.

prolly still fugged though lol

I’m running a 22” proof with 115 bergers at 3210. Seems like I might me able to squeeze a little more out of it, but it’s grouping great so I’m not gonna mess with it.

Ooooffffttttaaaahhhh that's awesome!
Anyone need 6.5 PRC dies?

16" 6UM-40 velocities.
Not what I expected, but this is what I got.

6UM-40
-115 DTACs.
-N570
-215Ms
-ADG 6UM brass.

16" Bartlein.
Defiance action.

I fireformed 110 rounds with 57gr H1000 then cleaned the barrel before I worked up a load.
Bumped shoulder .0005 (I would have bumped more but the fire forming load was mild and they chambered extremely easily)
Neck tension .002

Shoots tiny groups but I had really stiff bolt lift with 66gr of N570.
Ignore the seating depth that I scrathed out.
The last 4 groups of 4 shots were at 2.910 OAL.

So basically 2,960 fps before I had very stiff bolt lift.
Not great ES at all.
This was at 47 degrees ambient temperature, so I'm sure there will be more pressure at 70 degrees :-(

Alex is my go to guy for everything UM.
My wife doesn’t particularly care for Alex…..I met Alex on the phone yesterday extremely knowledgeable & likeminded. Layed down 50% $ on an 18” 6UM 40 in a Vesper…..just gotta be patient now & convince my wife it was a responsible decision…..🤣

I’m a newb with the 6UM, but I hit pressure earlier than I expected and I’m pretty sure it was from a carbon ring. I scrubbed the chamber/throat with iosso bore cleaner and was able to work back up. I think my final load is going to be 68 grains of 570 with the dtacs, and that got me close to 3200 with an 18” barrel.

How far are you loading off the lands?

I’m considering getting a xlr chassis for my 6um should I go short or long action on the chassis? I’m not sure what aic mag would feed it best.

What size neck bushing should I be shopping for Whidden dies….108eldm ADG brass
To piggy back off of this question, what is the trim length for the 6UM 30 brass for a 6UM 30 chamber? Also for those using the AMP annealer, what annealing code are you using? Is it the same as the 6.5 Saum?

Take your shortest case and trim the others to the same.

An example of mby why people should just not care about ES too much. 20-30 ES isn’t necessarily detrimental. If the target says it shoots (at your intended max distance) then pay no mind to the ES.
I've shot several .2 groups at 600 yards with ES's over 30FPS.

I just like to track ES for WILD 100fps type swings and crazy SD's. Mostly on new cartridges and powder/bullet combos without much info. But if it's even moderately consistent, I just shoot it at distance for sure.

And a 6UM isn't a freaking 6BR. Don't expect the same level of consistency or day to day accuracy. It's just not going to happen. It's for killing shit. As long as it shoots good enough to do that consistently, the rest is really just noise.

Very true. I don't think I've run the numbers until now.

For 10500 DA and 10mph full value and 650yd

18" 6um Dtac at 3200, 2.8 up, 0.7 windage
18" 243 108eld at 2885, 3.7 up, 0.9 windage
18" 243 112mb at 2820, 3.7 up, 0.8 windage.
When comparing cartridges, they look really different when you look at what you need to hold in certain wind. If you look at the margins for error in wind call to still make a hit on a kill zone in a specific instance, it takes a hell of a lot more horsepower to gain ground. For instance, if you miss a wind call by 1 mph on a 20 inch plate at 1000, a 6 dasher shooting a 108 beer at 2800 will still hit and so will a 243AI running a 115 dtac at 3150. Miss that wind call by 2 mph and both miss. I'm not good enough to call wind at half mph, so they are functionally the same. Where they separate themselves is in switchy head and tail winds where slight angle changes in wind make big differences on target. In those situations, I like to have all I can get.

6prc is closer to cm than it is to UM. I don't have a UM, but I have 20in 6cm,20in 6prc and 20in 6saum. The saum out paces the prc by 120-140 fps with 115/112. 6UM would be another 70-100 over Saum. The prc is only 100fps faster than my 6cm(have 4 from 18-22"). This is just my observations from shooting them, all are same barrel make, twist, land/groove config but 1.
6mm is like a disease
