The 22 creedmoor thread

What do you mean by less violent? In general, the Xs create a more lemon or football shaped wound versus the Ms with a much more round wound and in some cases a more narrow wound (they can be more inconsistent depending on the medium they hit).

The X wound channels generally are more like TMK wounds versus ELDM wounds.
I was teasing. Anything hitting bone (neck/spine) at +2800 fps impact velocity is going to be violent. The 80 ELDM did just what I hoped they would, laser beam trajectory to ~250 yards and easy to remain on target after firing. I've got around 60 rounds down the barrel so far and I'm extremely happy with my $600 Ruger American 22CM. Once I have 100 rounds through the pipe, I'll check my velocity again and see if the 80 ELDX ammo has sped up and how the groups compair to when it was brand new.

I agree In high velocity impacts. But what about down at lower 1800 limit? Wouldn’t the m be more likely to fragment and the x hold together and pencil?

What I posted rings true down to 1800ish on animals and gel as well. Animals at the very low impacts, I’ve refrained a bit more from in the last 5 years or so. I used to kill with SSTs down below 1,500ish. All of my kills lately are over 2,000 as down to 1,800 is shooting my 22 creed over 900 yards and my 6 creed over 800 yards.

This seems to be as good as I can get with the factory Hornady 80 ELDX load. Hoping to play around with a couple hand loads this week and find something suitable for Wyoming in a few weeks.
I tried factory and hand loaded 80 ELD X and Ms for 3 different .22 Creeds I’ve worked on. 2 had 1-8 twist factory Tikka barrels and the other was 1-7.5 PBB. Several different powders as well. Groups were awful no matter what I did. Ended up falling back on 77 TMKs that shoot great out of all of them.
Latest and 4th .22 Creed I just put together with a PBB prefit shoots factory 80 ELD Ms into tiny groups 🤷🏻‍♂️
In my experience the 80 ELD X/M is a really finicky bullet.

Switched powders and went away from Staball 6.5 as it never gave me anything worth a crap using 75ELDMs, 77 TMKs, 80ELDMs or 80 ELDXs with a variety of powder weights. Went with H4350 loaded to check psi and then loaded some to shoot. Great results were achieved with 77's and both 80's; it doesn't have a preference, as everything was acceptable. I think I will use the 80ELDXs, which averaged 3142fps out of my 17" barrel for this year.
Ive shot several deer with both the 80 Eldx and Eldm now (3250 fps). Am preferring the Eldm at all ranges. The Eldx can pencil for no apparent reason. The Eldm always penetrates and expands.

Shoot whichever one the barrel shoots better. The Xs have been picky barrel to barrel over the Ms for me.

And for killing, I’ve seen the Ms create both narrow wounds and immediate expansion (round) wounds where the Xs have been more consistent. More in the 88s than the 80s tho. My 80 M kill count is lower than 88 M and 80 X.

Curious to hear about your impact velocities and impact locations if you don’t mind? I know you kill a lot and appreciate the knowledge.

Centre to high shoulder hits. By the Eldx penciling I mean a narrow long wound channel and smallish exit. Still adequate for the purpose. Range circa 300, on cull deer. On the same size animals at similar ranges the Eldm have left a lot more trauma. At 300 yards they are both still holding 2700 fps. Photos bellow.
