The 22 creedmoor thread

I’m finally getting ready to order a 22 Creed barrel for a Tikka build. I have pretty much all the specs decided but I’m struggling with paralysis by analysis on the barrel length. It will be a suppressed rifle and the goal is to keep it as short as possible. I can’t make up my mind between a 16 or an 18.

I’m thinking 7.5 twist, .120 FB. I want to try the 88’s first but will probably do some stuff with the 80 grainers as well eventually.

I’d like to be around 2850-2900 MV with the 88. Can I realistically hit that with a 16” barrel without pushing the limits on pressure? Or should I just go with an 18?

With Hornady or alpha brass yes. I can run 90smks at 3200 with Ramshot grand in 18” with Hornady brass. I loaded the 80eldms at 3000 in my buddy’s 16” with h1000. These were with .080” freebore. .120 should be even better. 7.5” should be perfect for 16” speeds with the 80&88.

You running a brake, suppressor, or bare muzzle?

I’d go 18”. You’ll have an easier time reaching velocity goals without trashing your brass in the process.

Suppressed. Enticer S-TI.

My neighbor recently got one of those for his 7prc. I shot it last week, liked it a lot. 16” will be a tad louder than a 18”but essentially not much if any difference in the effectiveness of putting down game.

At 5k DA

88gr from a 16” at 2850fps
Terminal range 1800fps at 790yards

88gr from a 18” at 2900
Terminal range 1800fps at 820yards

You lose 30yds of terminal range by going 16 vs 18” and at 500yds or less you won’t see much if any difference in terminal performance.

I have killed game out to 360yds with the 80gr eldms at 2950 & 3050fps. I couldn’t see any difference in effectiveness at those ranges.

If your goal is short as possible I’d go 16” as long as you’re ok with the slightly increased noise penalty.

Started load development with my custom today. First group is the 77TMK .010” off the lands over 45.4gr of H1000. Coming out of the 22” 1:8tw barrel at 3198fps (avg according to my Xero).

Second group (RS says the photo from Hornady is too big) is the 85.5gr Berger LRHT .010” off the lands over 42.5gr of H1000 coming out of there at 2930fps to produce a .22” 3-rd group.

Haven’t hit any physical signs of pressure so I’m gonna keep going until I do or get the velocities I’m looking for in the 85.5’s, which is closer to 3100fps. If I can’t find an accurate, fast load then I’ll go back to the 42.5. The 77’s will stay right there, I think 3200fps and no signs of pressure is plenty for a 22” barrel.

I don’t recommend anybody ever go over book on powder charges. I’m just sharing my experience, so far. Without a way to test the only way I have to check for pressure are your typical tell-tale signs and I accept that I’m likely over book pressures, hope the safety scouts don’t hate me too much.

Got out to shoot again tonight and planned to test RL26 but when checking zero, my original load of N560 was showing some pretty substantial pressure signs. Had some other rounds loaded up at 100 FPS slower and they showed pressure as well….. i hate to think it but maybe it’s time to clean the barrel???? Probably 100 ish rounds on the barrel I’d guess.

Suppressed? I’ve been getting funky pressure signs all winter that I believe comes from condensation from suppressor in the cold..

Yes. I’ve always wondered if the suppressor and cold combination could have something to do with it as well. I have noticed it on other guns too. Haven’t seen it talked about much though

This thread made me start considering it and it seems there is something to it.. Did a little test last time out to confirm - 30 rounds with a brake - no issue, once suppressed bolt lift got stiff in a hurry.

Also noticed it in my dasher before a match a few weekends ago. Load I’ve used for thousands of rounds and is mellow. Swapped from a brake and notice pressure. Seemed to go away after a handful of shots then didn’t notice it the rest of the day. In the 22 creed, it was fine for a few shots, then immediately hot for a few. Let it cool down for a while, then same thing. Good for a shot or two then real hot. I need to pay attention and see if i notice any condensation.
