I’m finally getting ready to order a 22 Creed barrel for a Tikka build. I have pretty much all the specs decided but I’m struggling with paralysis by analysis on the barrel length. It will be a suppressed rifle and the goal is to keep it as short as possible. I can’t make up my mind between a 16 or an 18.

I’m thinking 7.5 twist, .120 FB. I want to try the 88’s first but will probably do some stuff with the 80 grainers as well eventually.

I’d like to be around 2850-2900 MV with the 88. Can I realistically hit that with a 16” barrel without pushing the limits on pressure? Or should I just go with an 18?

With Hornady or alpha brass yes. I can run 90smks at 3200 with Ramshot grand in 18” with Hornady brass. I loaded the 80eldms at 3000 in my buddy’s 16” with h1000. These were with .080” freebore. .120 should be even better. 7.5” should be perfect for 16” speeds with the 80&88.

You running a brake, suppressor, or bare muzzle?

I’d go 18”. You’ll have an easier time reaching velocity goals without trashing your brass in the process.

My neighbor recently got one of those for his 7prc. I shot it last week, liked it a lot. 16” will be a tad louder than a 18”but essentially not much if any difference in the effectiveness of putting down game.

At 5k DA

88gr from a 16” at 2850fps
Terminal range 1800fps at 790yards

88gr from a 18” at 2900
Terminal range 1800fps at 820yards

You lose 30yds of terminal range by going 16 vs 18” and at 500yds or less you won’t see much if any difference in terminal performance.

I have killed game out to 360yds with the 80gr eldms at 2950 & 3050fps. I couldn’t see any difference in effectiveness at those ranges.

If your goal is short as possible I’d go 16” as long as you’re ok with the slightly increased noise penalty.
