The 22 creedmoor thread

It was/is surprising to me as well. Bench rest shooters shoot 3 shot "groups" with 20-30 lb guns on concrete benches with extra weights placed where needed. They could be on 10X 30X or 50X and it wouldn't matter.
Right. But if if didnt matter they would shoot on 10x, but they don’t.

In hunting situation lower power often helps with situational awareness and you are aiming for a 10” area.

For target precision generally higher magnification helps.

All my opinion of course.

No I’m saying the opposite has been observed.

And it’s not some astronomical discrepancy and the comparison was very rudimentary.

Have shooters shoot on 6-10x for 5ish shot groups and then have them shoot on 15x and above. The data slightly favored 6-10x groups.

I’ve heard that said quite a bit. And don’t doubt what you have seen.

For me, I get better groups with higher mag.

For hunting, 6-8x works perfect most of the time.

One group was shot at 6x, one at 24x. 8lb 223 and 12lb 6.5cm

It looks like 39.5gr H4350 is the end of the road for the 77s in my 18" barrel...around 3120fps.

I adjusted my sizing die just beyond the point where brass would not chamber and got the flat primers to go away.

I put the same load in my "once fired" brass that was formed before the die adjustment and the primers are flat but the bolt was not sticky.

I had stiff bolt lift and marks at 40gr and 40.5gr powder with the new size brass.

This barrel has around 160 rounds on it now.

I have a 19" 22-250 barrel here that will make the same speed with same projectile just under 37gr powder.

3120 with the 77s is pretty good. But for some reason your rifle seems to be pressuring up early with lower charges than normal. Which is strange because I figured it would take more powder to reach the same top pressures using a nitrided barrel.

In my 18” with necked down 6.5 cm Hornady brass. When I ran 80elds at 3220 with h1000 my brass looked similar to yours. I backed it down 3200 though and the light ej marks went away. You barrel still might gain some velocity soon, nitrided barrel will just take longer to get there.

Yeah, I'm vacillating on trying to shoot thru the hump or just pull it and put the PBB barrel from the group buy on to compare.

I'll leave it on there until I get the 2 boxes of factory 80 ELD I ordered...I want to see what those do.

Sounds like it’s still worth a shot. As long as the accuracy is acceptable. And there’s a few other powders that will give you an additional 75-100fps if you wanted it.

Picked up one of the Preferred group buy barrels in 18". Got it rolling this past week, Rokslide special blueprint.

Set up to load at the range as I typically do when working with something brand new.

Ended up here:

10 shots went right around .75", zero is almost exactly between clicks.

Velocity data.

It's 60 rounds in so far. It isn't soft per se but I'm comfortable with where it's at regarding pressure signs. If it doesn't speed up any more by 100 rounds I may try bumping the charge a whisker, but I may leave it alone too.

This barrel with factory ammo.

A little slower than most are seeing in a 18” but only by 50-100fps. That nitrided barrel might speed up soon.

I can't imagine another scenario where I would ever nitride another barrel. I just sent it in because it was part of the deal and now that I have a few hundred rounds downrange its hard to validate even nitriding an action or bolt compared to a "regular" stainless gun.

What nitride does do is functionally make the gun 100% maintenance free regardless of environment.

I spoke with John whidden several years ago. He nitrided comp barrels for a few years then went back to just stainless. Talking to him I decided against it. He said he got a little more barrel life but the cost for nitriding balances that gain back out. Even before I spoke with him I was leaning against it. Saw to many cases of ppl having issues. Hard to beat a stainless factory tikka. But you never know until you try something first hand. Even so, long as the accuracy is there. With a potential loss of 50-100fps it won’t effect much with your rifle. Although I would like to get a few actions nitrided, as most mine are chrome moly.

If a gun company is offering properly nitrided guns from the OEM then it’s a great option, especially for very harsh coastal environments or heavy use users.

Having Joe Blow Tacticool Coatings nitride your barreled action is where the issues can arise.
