So I was out in Idaho for my first back country archery Elk hunt. Got there last Friday. We saw elk everyday. No real bugling but saw good numbers. Wednesday morning I got a text on my in reach from my wife. My dad was put on life support back in PA. So I had to leave early and make my way to PA. Got in last night. My dad is holding his own right now. The point of this post is without my Garmin I would have ever known about this. Most folks, including me, think of the in reach for if you get hurt. So you can get help. Which it is great for that too. But a lot can happen while your out of touch for a week or more. I’m thankful I was able to get home A lot of guys don’t carry any way to communicate with their families. I suggest you look into something.

I can’t wait for next September to get here.

So sorry for your bad news
I head to Idaho Monday
I too utilize Garmin in reach and have for a few years now
Priceless....

BigT,

Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope he pulls out of it. I also use the InReach. I'm 68 and it gives my wife a lot of comfort to just get a text from me once or twice a day. She also frequently sends me messages and when she gets a message it comes with a map she can zoom in on showing exactly where I am. It has a internal rechargable battery that seems to seldom need recharged too.

It’s handy but I found out be aware it’s not flawless, for 3days last week my messages to my wife weren’t being delivered which caused me some concern. There was an issue with them sending messages to ATT SMS apparently. I’ll send a message to her email also in the future if something seems a miss.
