Well, I had a guided hunt all lined up in Montana. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful in drawing a license. I sure would like to make a trip somewhere this year. Having said that I've always had the desire to experience a Texas WT hunt. This seems like a good year to do just that.. The experience is tops on my list and a hunt for a management buck would be just fine. My only real criteria is it must be a low fence operation. I'd sure appreciate it if anyone had the name of an operation I could contact and discuss a possible hunt. Thanks for your help.

Not to be rude but what appeals to you about sitting in a stand over a feeder?

This is coming from a Texan that has done it all my life. If do it to get out of the city, I just wouldn't suggest someone drive down to do it.

We have very fun hunts like night vision hog and hog doggin. I have suggestions for both.

If you do come you will see a lot of deer. And it really is unique to see what comes out when the dinner bell goes off. Central Texas has some free range place where you can see axis, aoudad. All excaped from a former high fence operation but they are free to roam now.

What size deer are you looking for?

Do whatever you feel like doing. If that’s shoot a deer from a blind, don’t let anybody talk you out of it. Call Haiden at South Texas Hunting Outfitters (361) 449-5957.

He can talk you through some options. There are places you can do more than sit in a blind. I would try to come down during the rut and do some rattling. And some of his management deer are bigger than anything I have killed.

Not every Texan sits in a stand over a feeder. I've hunted TX whitetails most of my life and I only do that as a last resort or if I'm culling does (and usually then as a last resort). Even the 200 ac. lease I have, I usually hunt on my feet and have killed most of the deer there, in that way.

There are a ton of low-fence operations in South Texas that will give you an opportunity to hunt however you want. I'm not opposed to someone who wants to hunt out of a tower stand over feeders, but that's certainly not your only option.

An option for you (although I've still never been drawn) is to apply for the TPWD drawn hunts on state managed lands. Yes they are highly controlled but the scenery in some of those places is awesome.

Another option is public land. Yes, there are some good whitetail hunts to be had on public land in Texas if you do your homework. I hunted public land in TX almost exclusively (no feeders, stands have to be removed every day) for years and that would be my first choice if I lived closer to a public area.

I would try to come down during the rut and do some rattling.

Quite a few of the bucks I've killed in TX came in to rattling, going all the way back to my first in east TX in the mid 80's. It's an exciting way to hunt and often very productive if you time it right.

Are you looking rifle, bow, ml?

Hunting Texas whitetails with a bow would give you the opportunity to see a truly wired deer do a belly flop and turn a 180 as you release then watch your arrow sail over it's back into the brush which is usually covered in thorns....and you just might get an opportunity at a hog also.

I say go for it.

They are the matrix subspecies. We have 'em too on public ground esp. Point of aim is somewhere between the ankle and the knee 😁

So true.

I shot NM mule deer and IL whitetails that watched me draw my bow, and then stood there and watched the arrow hit them. I was in shock. You will never see a TX whitetail that watches you even draw your bow, much less shoot it.

belly flop triple gainer double axle inside out inverted corkscrew is about how it happens around here.

Some whoppers in North Texas.
Look into the Texas Hunting Forum .
Lots of options for deer hunting as stated, pick your method and give it a try.
South Texas hunts are generally big dollars= big deer. Hill Country= smaller deer and more of them. North Texas= big bucks and not as well known yet so prices may be lower. Panhandle= mule deer and whitetails.
Hogs are a given on any hunt.

Find a place where you can get the full TX experience! Rattle some whitetails, shoot hogs or javelina and do some spectacular predator hunting.

And listen to WYTX, its almost like he's been there or something!

Shoot me a PM- might have a spot you'd be interested in. Where are you traveling from?

Tx WT walk through the woods going to die of stress or a Heart attack at any moment, But sure are fun to bow hunt. I’d look into South, or south West Tx. Lots of animals, plenty of opportunity. Expect 120-140 WT, Pigs, Javelina and low fence exotics in areas. Next best thing to a Mexico WT hunt.

Texashunting forum is good.

Texasbowhunter.com is a better form to gather some good Info.

There's enough public land in Texas you could hunt as well. Army Corps of Engineers land in many places along with Angelina National Forest and a few other places. Plus you always have the chance to stick a few hogs as well. No bag limit on those bastards

First thing people think of when they think of Texas is sitting over a feeder, but you haven't seen all there is to see of whitetail hunting until you've rattled a big buck out of the brush. Something everyone should experience. If you don't like stand hunting, best advice is to get out of the stand...
