Folks that bring their dogs on trips. Ideally the dog would sleep in the vestibule but i feel like my lab would wanna be inside the tent. My worry is the dogs nails punching holes in the floor of the tent and or the sleeping pad. Anyone experience that?

Yea. Floorless helps but my lab always wants to slip out under the tepee. When he is inside the tent, it's a struggle to keep him off my pad. We have two pads that definitely have pinholes from his claws.

The little dude is too old (arthritis) to backpack now so when he goes camping, he now sleeps in the truck.

A smaller dog might be less of an issue but a 90lb+ that doesn't like enclosed spaces has been a struggle for me.

I backpack with my GSP all the time & haven’t had any major issues. She’s on the smaller side though. She sleeps in the tent with us on top of our sleeping pads & quilts. I worry about her damaging something but it hasn’t happened yet. I’ve tried putting booties & socks on her feet but it’s a pain so I kinda gave up on it.

One time I left her in the tent while I stepped out to do something & she scratched at the screen door & put a small rip in it I had to repair. So far that’s the only casualty.

Many years ago, My Aussie stepped on the side of my Golite Tipi and put a 30” gash in it. I was inside, he heard me….and made himself a new door.

Bring that tent repair tape…Tenacious tape I think they call it.

After that I started making my tipis from stronger fabic

I have a GWP that likes to sprawl out when sleeping. I keep thinking he's going to punch a hole in my Big Agnes 1-man something-er-other tent, but so far he hasn't. Not sure if that is an endorsement for that tent or a compliment to the dog, but I do find it surprising that nothing has gone south yet

a dog that listens to a place command is a good thing...you can also bring a long/stout stake and tie the dog off so it cannot reach certain areas. My 20ish# doggie sleeps with me...no issues with a cloth cover over the pad so far. Klymit sells pad covers in a few sizes....I use that on my therm-a-rests. I also tie the pad off to the side of the tipi when I am not sleeping and have a closed cell foam pad available.

Yes, both of those things have happened to me. He still comes in the tent.

My lab punctured one sleeping pad. Was more my fault, but in general he is great in the tent, make sure they have a good bed, it is the only place I have seen him cold.

I heat a little water with my stove and add to his kibble. I figure we all enjoy a warm meal before bed. Definitely test it with a finger before letting him eat though.

I've had both my dogs come along on trips and never had them poke holes in the floor or my sleeping pad. I did buy a woobie for my dog to sleep on though and i think this will also help protect the floor or sleeping pad. Other thing to think about is how quickly your dog dries...if they tend to stay wet for awhile your gear can get wet having a woobie or something similar will help keep your dog from getting your stuff wet.

This is what I do for the cattle dogs. I designated an old NF Cats Meow as my winter dog bed. I wrap them up next to me and my pad/sleep system. They're warm and happy and my gear and I stay dry.

I use floorless so that helps.

I always have them in the tent, but they do need some training. Like the door, not to be too excitable, etc...

We carry a small fleece blanket for them to sleep on. When it is cooler, and the dogs are getting cold a human insulated vest works really well to keep them warm, it never falls off (put on backwards, zip up the back). If the bugs are bad for summer camping being in the tent gives them a lot of relief, I've had them get just pounded by mosquitos by day.

thanks guys, my dog is going to be 2 in may, he still gets pretty amped up. So i might wait till hes three, but ill see this summer. Im sure if i brought a blanket along he'd probably be fine in the vestibule. But hes like a cat and always wants to be touched..needy.

My dog is medium size, around 50lbs, and sleeps in the tent with me. She's a hound mix and not too excitable though. I did cut one of my old foam sleeping pads up for her and throw a cheap synthetic puffy blanket over her when it's cold out. Seems to do alright and the pad gives her a definite space to stay in.
