Taking Equity out of Home to Go on Guided Hunts

You’re really blowing out of proportion how important a guided sheep hunt is on quality of living.
That’s not even a tangent to the point.

Has nothing to do with quality of life, or whatever random nonsense you’re going to say.

You made a statement that it’s old folks hunting, and big spenders and a fad.

I’m providing actual info to the contrary. It has gotten more expensive, harder to book, and it’s not just older folks.

I’m in my 30’s and can afford it.

There are more people who can afford it and will continue to pay the increase then there are sheep on the mountain.

Supply and demand is a simple concept in this instance.

Who cares if the cost goes up, or if there is less availability? Everything has gotten more expensive. Thats how economics work. An economy that is healthy has inflation.

Are you dense or something?

It’s as if you’re making statements without any recollection of your own previous ones.

My previous ones were this is a fad, no one else cares if some people chose to take them or not. Some day the fad will be over and few people will be lining up to pay too much to shoot a sheep.

I dont care if they are 60k or 6k, I dont like hunting with guides. If someone likes having someone to take care of them and do everything for them im not against that, I just dont put that on the same level of enjoyment as actual hunting.

I have no issue finding sheep or getting close to them. Someday I will draw the $140 resident tag and be able to shoot one.

Therefore, this idea of the world is ending because guided sheep prices went up a couple years in a row has no effect on the majority of us.

The fad of people tearing down other hunters because of jealousy is the one that really needs to go away.

“In 30 years I’ll get a good deal on a sheep hunt”

You won’t, but good luck.

Seems like we are arguing about value judgments and OP did the deal and has already been on 2 of the hunts with the third this year. His comments about the continued escalation of sheep hunt prices has borne out true. Until something material changes, I would expect prices to continue to increase. Was it a good idea? Who knows, but OP is happy with his decision and that's all that matters.

@HornPorn, how are the sheep hunts going so far? How many are you in?
Currently booked with Lancaster's for Sheep this fall and Moose in 2027. Taking 2028 off and then booked with Iron North for sheep in 2029. I love the McKenzie's and plan to go back as much as I can. I'll eventually book these hunts for Caribou as I age out of the Sheep. I live with McKenzie's on the mind 365!

I would like to just take a second to point out this is a false representation of what a guided hunt can be. I’ve never met a guide who does all this. I’ve always approached my guide business as providing a hunting buddy with local knowledge and experience. Not a babysitter. Not “a do everything for them”.

To project an opinion that a guided hunt is not “actual hunting” is…well….how do I say this…I guess just an opinion. Not fact.

3 of 4 done. Got the dall, the stone, and the desert.

Dall in NWT $36,000 2024 (same outfitter now charging $50K) - $14K saved
Stone in BC $85,000 2025 (same outfitter now charging $105K) - $20K saved
Desert in Mexico $55,000 2026 (no change in price)
Cali bighorn in BC $120,000 2028 (same outfitter now charing $150K) - $30K saved

So as of today, I saved $64K by booking these hunts when I did vs waiting until now.

Those are the increases if you booked them all now. In reality your savings will be much higher.

Congrats!

Damn that’s some nice savings!!!!
Don’t forget about the accrued interest!?!

about $20K per year in interest times 3 years worth is $60K

Thats if all was drawn at once back in middle of 2024.

Actually it’s 2026 now so it would be 2 years worth of interest at this point. If he drew the entire amount and didn’t pay anything towards the principal he’d have paid almost $40k in interest so far. Decent savings over the pay as you go option.
