Appreciate the update Grayrider and I am super disappointed you didn’t get a ram, was pulling for you. Still looks like an amazing adventure and thanks for sharing some pictures!

It is called hunting and not killing, however when you are shelling out that kind of dough, you would hope for better than seeing 1 legal ram in a combined month of hunting and a 30% successful rate overall. I would have to think that most people would have a hard time spending that kind of money on a low success rate hunt. This will probably just put more pressure on the areas in Canada that still have healthy populations and high success rates.

Thanks for the reply, DRHunter. I have been very blessed and thankful over the years in all of my previous hunts in various locations, both domestic and international. No worries here and no time to look backwards because I am not traveling in that direction!

Success rates and financial costs now in dall sheep hunting in many places is very comparable to hunting leopard over bait in quite a bit of southern Africa. Very general observation of 35 - 45% success rate and $50,000+ base price easily. Some areas are better than others obviously.

I have heard of hunters returning to Africa on 5 different hunts in 5 different locations with 5 different outfitters before finally killing a leopard over bait - that is dedication ( and borderline mental insanity) in my book. (Disclosure: I have only killed a leopard with hounds in Botswana which has a much higher success rate of around 85% than leopard hunting over bait.)

I would like to try the leopard hunt over bait before I get too old to travel and hunt but much like a North America sheep hunt, I would understand the overall success rate and risk-return before beginning the journey. Like life, no guarantees. Take the good with the bad.

In my teens and twenties my dream was to get a sheep slam but didn’t have any money. Now I have money but I’m not spending that coin to hang a few sheep heads on the wall. There’s too many hunts I could do for just a few of those!! I may give in and try for a dall soon but I’m more than likely waiting to get lucky in draws. I have 17(now worthless) points in WY, and every year I end up buying another just because I can’t quit!
My wife’s been pretty nice letting me go away on my DIY hunts every year and she’s been talking Africa. So I think that may very well be where my “sheep” hunt money goes.
Best of luck to those who have the opportunity to pursue them, but to take out a second mortgage, uugghh!

Not to split hairs, and I’m not the OP, but he wasn’t taking out a second mortgage. His house was paid off.

It’s basically splitting hairs, he’s taking out a loan and paying interest for a hunt that is insanely overpriced already. And rates that suck to boot. His money…I hope he gets his slam!

My house appraised at about half million.

The sheep tag i put in for this year was $150. Its the same place i hunt antelope. I usually have them walking by me while im antelope hunting.

40 years ago some guy paid $600 for a hunting rifle.
Last year I paid $280 for it in a gun shop.

When i turned 18 i paid $300 for a hunting shotgun. Just had it out for snow geese yesterday.

Im married with kids, and am a few years away from paying my house off.

Do you see a pattern here?

Im guess you dont so ill explain it.

Spending more money on something doesnt make it better. But spending money you already have, on something you can afford, is what makes life enjoyable.

Financial sustainability.

Definition of what you can afford: in 2 years will you remember the use you achieved with the purchase or how you acquired the money?

If the answer is remember the use only you can afford it.

If the answer is remember the use and the money acquisition you cannot afford it.

If the answer is only remember the money acquisition, you can only dream of meeting the numbers to finance it.

Second option is no go.

Third option means you way above your head.

Be smart with money and in 10 years you will be taking all the hunts you want.

Refinance your house to hunt and you will spend 10 years dreaming about hunting everyday when your working overtime to pay for that one hunt you put your house on the line for, only for it to rain the whole time and you to miss the two shots you got.
