I'm going to South Africa next month to hunt plains game. It seems importing a rifle is a bit of a hassle, but these rental is not inexpensive.

Can anyone here provide a recommendation?

Thanks!

we went and i was perfectly content on borrowing a rifle for the few animals i did take with a rifle, the guy that went with me felt opposite. He wished he would have taken his with him. It was fine until he missed a couple animals. then it was the perfect excuse.

also, fwiw both places said they "charge daily" for the rental but neither place we hunted actually did charge us.

I like to shoot my own guns. Shooting someone else's would shake my confidence. But that is just me. Some guys probably don't mind.

I only bowhunted when I went but I was under the impression that it is really not that big of a deal to take a rifle. I would take my own equipment but I guess I could see borrowing one.

I have been twice first time we rented from PH. It was ok 270 with cheap soft points. I did end up wounding a kudu that could have gone a different way potentially with better bullets??? I will never know nor does it matter anymore. Second trip 2 years later dad and I both took our own rifles went perfectly for the most part 20 animals in 10 days for 2 guys! We were rifle only hunting. We used Afton guest house's gun concierge service but I think as long as your paperwork is in order its pretty straight forward. Worth the $100 probably as you are getting off of 30+ hrs of travel. I would ask the outfitter what brands and calibers are available and then try to lock it in. Some places have good rifles and some really don't.
