Can anyone that owns or has owned both give me your honest opinion what separate the two lines other than a parallax side adj. knob.
Is it just better glass. The z5 with a 44mm obj weigh more than the z3 with a 50mm obj so I am guessing that has a bit to do with it.
Any one?

My dad has a z3 on his tikka and i've got a z5 on my wby. The z5's fit and finish is a little nicer, the 44m is brighter than his 50mm, and the reticles in the z5 are thinner than the z3's which is nicer for long range shooting. Both have the BT on them and we both love it.

Don't get me wrong, the z3 is one hell of a scope, but the z5 is just that much nicer.

I own a Z3 and have used a Z5 quite a bit. I didn't notice the fit and finish difference that Todd did. I am also surprised a bit by Todd saying the reticles are thicker on the Z3. I did not notice that (I saw BRH reticles in both), and Swarovski's literature I have seen shows the specific reticle subtensions are the same throughout the model ranges (Z3, Z5, Z6).

The differences I noticed:

Of course the Z5 offers a 5x magnification range, while the Z3 offers a 3x range (thus the model names).

Optically, both utilize the same optical technologies when it comes to raw glass, coatings, etc. This does not mean they perform the same, however, as each scope model has its own optical design. I will say both lines perform at a very high level.

A big difference that doesn't get much press is the Z3 uses a traditional leaf spring erector system. The Z5 on the other hand offers Swarovski's overbuilt coil erector system. My Z3 is quite accurate in adjustment and holding zero, but there is little doubt the coil system should be stronger.

I would guess the more complicated design and additional glass elements for a 5x zoom range combined with the coil erector adjustment system are the reason for the increased price and weight for the Z5 series.

Thanks guys. I am putting together a new toy and the Swaros rifle scopes are new to me. It does not help that I over think gear like a wolf likes meat.

Well, I can clarify a couple of my comments,

As for fit and finish, I find the eye piece on the Z5 to be finished nicer (they are different on how they are made) and it is smoother in adjustment for focus than the Z3. The power ring on the Z5 is also smoother and not as hard to turn while changing power (between the two scopes we have, it may be different with other scopes...)

We are both using the ballistic turret so they both have plex reticles, but the ones in the Z5 are much thinner than the Z3. I would say at least 50% thinner by my guess. (not sure how I would find specs on it?)(other reticle options may be different?)

As for brightness, we have been side by side on multiple hunts over the last couple years we have had these scopes, and when set side by each and on the same power setting, we both find the Z5 to be a bit brighter and more crisp of an image in low light conditions. This has been our observations and may not be the same for everyone.

As I stated before and on multiple other threads about these scopes, you won't go wrong with either one.

Oh that makes sense, Todd. For some reason I thought you were referring to the ballistic reticles. They are subtended the same at max magnification regardless of the line of scope.

The Plex reticle is much thinner on the 3.5-18 Z5 than the 4-12 Z3. you can find the data here:

Thanks for clarifying the fit and finish thing. Sounds reasonable to me. The Eyepiece design on the Z5 is definitely different than the Z3, and my Z3 is also pretty stiff to turn (although it has loosened through use).

I agree completely that they are both fine scope lines.

Edit: Sorry I was writing this post while you posted the tech link...

Yes, the Plex is much thinner, like target scope thin, on the Z5.

Thanks guys.
I had not noticed that the reticle were diff. I will be ordering a scope with a ballistic turret either way and the custom turret from Swaro looks nice.
I have looked into the Kenton turrets for the Zeiss but it just seems simpler to try the Z5 or Z3 and after dialing in a load with the standard turret, order the custom.
They all look good.
I even looked a the Leica ER scopes with the turret. They look nice too but it seems nobody sells them. Even dealers of Leica.
Guess it's nice to have some many good glass options.
