Surgery Thursday, not to be confused with taco Tuesday. I'm having total hip replacement tomorrow, any words of advice on my expectations when I return home. I really getting excited. I wonder if they will let me have the old parts, in the past when I took my tuck in for repairs I alas asked for the old parts back.

My wife's surgeon said I could have the humeral head if she ever needs her other hip replaced.

She followed directions and maybe pushed the walking a little. She thought the hip replacement was a breeze. She's lifting weights (squats, deadlift) and pushing a prowler at the gym now. She's 69 yo. And I am not involved in her training at all (one secret to a long marriage).

I'm a PT, you'll be rucking around chasing elk this fall as long as no major complications pop up. If I ever have to get anything replaced give me a hip over a knee or shoulder any day of the week.

Rehab's generally not bad at all, get through those first 2 weeks and life will be good again. Don't try to be a hero to get off the pain meds right away, take them, there will be time to wean off later.

This entire process started about three years ago, BC, before covid. I went to Dr. about pain in the front of my knee, Patels tendon area, after ex-ray, he said you need knee replacement. I saw ex-ray of good knee compared to my knee. I told him lets go with band aid for now, injections. then covid hit and everything got put on hold. Fast forward, I went back and told him I had groin pain, not real bad, thinking at worst hernia, nope bone on bone. So I scheduled knee replacement. Surgery date was nine weeks out. About three weeks after scheduling knee surgery hip went to hell fast, so I talked to surgeon and asked if we could do hip in place of knee, which he thought was a great idea. So here we are. He said knee pain will likely get better after hip replacement. It's the old, leg bone connected to the knee bone, the knee bone connected to the hip bone and so on. If I do have to have knee done, it won't be until after the tuna run and elk hunt are over. Likely after first of year.

A friend of mine had her hip replaced a few years ago, said it was much less drama/recovery than she expected. If I remember correctly she was walking within a few days and was back to normal in short order- however at the time she was one of the top competitors in women's highland games (internationally) so she was in great shape and had a lot of motivation to stay in top form.

Back home now. All in all it wasn't too bad, I know I have a few weeks to get back in the game but that will go by fast. I had two bad issue, first was zero sleep in hospital I couldn't get comfortable no matter how I tried. Of course with hip replacement you are sitting/laying on your ass and you can't turn over even a little . they had put a leg stabilizer on my leg from heel to upper thigh. Second was, when they removed the original dressing. they used a ungodly amount of REAL GGOD tape that was determined to remain a permanent part of my body. Damn that hurt. Pain is not to the point of needing pain meds yet, They asked if I wanted any, but I said for now I"ll pass. but I will take them as needed. thanks for all the advice and support you sent out. I have had both of mine replaced. The best advise I can provide is follow the exercise program +1. With each hip I was provided with a book of suggested exercises that I followed diligently including walking at first in the house then outside multiple times per day. After a few weeks I started walking my stairs as I could. There is a limit to how hard you can push it and you will know that boundary.

After that walk as much as you can plus a little. The second hip is easier than the first.

Initially I used their pain pills but after that an occasional tylenol was adequate to help me sleep. Like others have said a stool softner is your friend.
