I started to do my own work because of shops like the one you called. I think that whoever you talked to is upset that you didn't buy the strings from them but that is no excuse to bad mouth a reputable string maker like Hogwire.

Have you considered installing them yourself?

At some point I'd like to learn how to do it myself but I'm to knew to archery to try. In the next year I'd like to get a bowmaster press and try doing some stuff on my own.

Trust me: You don't want a bow master press. If you want a portable but capable bow press, you need a Synunm bow press. I find my self preferring this over my fill size press 100% of the time now. Candidly, their is no comparison between the BP and the Synunm. The price difference is significant but well worth it. It will press ANY bow safely.

Another good safe press in addition to the Synunm is the Knight Hawk. It can press any bow and I can pick the bow up while presses and turn it over to work on string or cable loops that attach to the other side of the cam easily and have no worry about the press ever coming off. Up to this point I usually just put winners choice strings on all of my bows but I believe in the last 4-5 years there have been alot of smaller startup operations that offer better quality strings at a lower cost so one of them will be the direction I go next. Been buying and selling too many bows so haven't actually replaced a string set in that timeframe.

In this state, a bow press pays for itself pretty quickly. Same with arrow saws, arrow fletchers and draw boards, especially if you have friends who shoot. Even somewhere with easier access to competent shops, I still like to do my own stuff.

I'm a bowmaster press dirt bag for the last 15+ years. Also built a spine tester, 8000 rpm arrow saw and draw board. Total I'm in about $150 not including scales and blitz fletcher and can do everything a pro shop can do. Well worth the time to do everything yourself, especially with today's bows where you need to adjust strings to get in spec then a half a twist here and there can make all the difference tuning broadheads. All the DIY designs I copied off AT and modified as needed. If there is any interest I can post some pics of my "shop tools" although onTarget7 and other pro tuners may throw up when they see them but hey it works. And thanks to all the pro tuners who post up so much good info it has helped me a ton over the years.

I did a lot of research before I ordered the strings and think I made the right choice. Just seemed odd to me.

I've used Hogwire strings for several years now with great results. I would be little nervous having the same shop install strings they don't like.

I was able to sign up for a bow tuning class in a couple weeks where they will swap the strings before hand and then teach me how to tune afterwards

Electric Bowstrings — Jimbows n Arrows
"Electric strings" by Jim bows N arrows

$90 shipped
3 color
Beefy strings for my Full Throttle

Time will tell how they hold up- comes with a 1 yr warranty

They cant be any worst than the AB strings on the PSE in 2013-2014 model years.

I'm taking my bow a part and dipping the riser in white winter camo, and the limbs in a silver carbon fiber so I order strings in white/black/silver combo

I have been comparing catfish custom and Hogwire strings. What makes Hogwire worth an additional $45 which is almost double catfish?

You have both sets on two separate bows ?

I have used a couple sets of Catfish Custom's from guys that have sent them in with their bows and would always get serving separation way early. Hopefully they have improved over time as I have not seen any come in lately.

I have used quite a few guys and Rob at Hogwire builds a very nice set of strings.

Shane at Buckslayer is another one that builds some quality strings.

Will be working up a review on Center Circle Strings here shortly.

BMC - thanks for this post! I'm in need of strings myself and the string market is flooded with choices (not a bad thing at all). I've used JBK in the past and glad to see his name brought up several times in the this thread. I think I'll go with him again.

I don't have either set currently. I meant comparing which option to go with. I looked up Buckslayer also and seems to be right in the mix. Your observation of serving separation on catfish may eliminate that one although plenty of people seem to recommend them.

Hopefully he's gotten better but the sets I have had to tune weren't the greatest.

I don't take much stock in what some say are good strings.

Ray Knight was a perfect example. Everyone swore by his strings so I had customers send them with their bows. Man, they looked amazing but nothing but problems for serving separation and holding a tune.

Maybe I'm just too picky or bad luck. It is the internet so some might not have much to go off of when comparing what good strings are, who knows.

What are your thoughts on Proline strings and JBK?

How about I give a list of a few that I prefer instead of picking apart others. I'm sure there are other solid choices I have not tried yet.

Buckslayer
Ex-Wolverine
Stage1Strings
Hogwire

For string material I still prefer 452X
It's still more stable over the long haul and in the low wax option it will have far less serving separation than some of the other choices when built right.

Surprised about the Ray Knight strings, wonder if the tune problem had anything to do with the string material, fury?? I thought about getting some and make myself a couple of sets to try but desided to stay with BCYX I've had very good results with it. Was the serving separation on the string or just the cables?? From my own experience the newer bows with the sharper drop at the modules are a pain in the butt for serving separation. I've found that I have to sinch the snout out of them when serving them to stop the seperation

Definitely not material, as I had a few other guys I currently use build sets out of Fury with no issues. For 5 sets all to be bad was enough for me to say no more.
Serving separation was cables and center serving area. The guy I service in Hawaii, his peep rotated 180* and he is a repeat customer that never saw that from any other sets in the past. I just don't have issues with serving separation, even on your sharp turns on cables and certain cams.

Low wax 452x is the best in regards to serving staying tight over the long haul.
