Stocky's Stock Finish?

I am wondering if anyone else bought a Stocky's Stock having a rough finish. I bought a plain carbon finished stock a month ago. because the hydro-dipped options were, and still are not, available in the particular make/model I wanted.

The style and design I really like but the finished caught me by surprise. When emailing Stocky's back, with pictures, their reply was the carbon stocks come that way. Disappointed, I worked at the stock to see if some of the blemishes could be removed.

After searching online for sponge painting ideas there were pictures of plain carbon Stocky's stocks that appeared flawless and one a poster was complaining about their stock that did not look that bad to me.

Below are the photos I sent to Stocky's and how it was received when shipped. The scratches I managed to sand out. Some of the blemishes could not be removed at all. The unevenness at the top and bottom seam I managed to get fairly flat, but it does not look good after removing so much carbon fiber to get it flat. Some areas were so uneven there was no carbon fiber material left after sanding.

What do you guys think? Did anyone receive a carbon stock like this and was told that's the way they come?

Stocky's is not as pricey as others, but I was not expecting this type of finish. Am I being too fussy?

Seems about the norm - my bare carbon looked similar. I ended up just doing some light sponge paint to cover the rough areas and several coats of matte clear coat. Much better now.

If you plan to hunt it, beat on it, and not worry about cosmetics, I’d spray it your way and call it good. If you want to have it look pretty and collect dust, call them and have them send you a new one. I personally do not fret small cosmetic shit as long as it’s Inlet correctly, is stiff, and is ergonomically pleasing..,

Mine had some rough spots also but I also ordered it as plain carbon with the intention to build up the grip and paint it myself. Looks great now.

Okay, thanks guys. I get it, I am being too fussy.

I'm always building stuff. My brother-in-law frequently told me, "It isn't a church". When fabricating a project my motto has always been. "If I treat it like a church it doesn't look like hell when finished".

Hahahha, that’s awesome.

With some filling and good paint, they dress up nice. But it’s a pig that needs lots of lipstick to be pretty. It can be done.

If it was me I would have sent it back. I struggle to think a finish like that is acceptable to send to a customer

I have a bare carbon that is similar, but not as bad, but I bought it with the intent to paint it anyways.

If you're worried about it, I'm sure Stockys will take care of you.

I could deal with that. I had one that had the carbon unraveled ends that show in the grip area. Asked if I could send it back as my intention was to leave as bare carbon with a sanded finish. They told me it was normal and pretty much they would t exchange it. Now I have to live with it the way it is and the ocd makes it tough. Was just gonna sponge it and move on. At the end of the day the price is still right for what it is imo

There was a day where they supplied much better finished stocks. Now they all seem to come as what they used to supply as seconds. I suspect they’ve had to increase production to the point that the time and available labor skill just isn’t there anymore and they are getting away with it. I never cared and bought the seconds anyway to save a few $$$.

Question, do they even offer a “second” as an option anymore? I’m thinking no because the current firsts look like the seconds of past.

That is worse than the one I got.

Ask me if I would be willing to pay more for the perfect picture shown online the answer is yes, no matter who the stock maker is. Just clearly/honestly show me what I'm buying.

Yes. There are a few, listed under the Bargain Barn tab near the top of the page.

It’s about like going to Wendy’s for a cheeseburger.
It’s never like the one I saw on TV.
