Stock painting help/examples

Curious how well it holds up after time, I know it can be touched up. I have done several bows, and the grip area always wears quickly. Any body know if they make an epoxy type paint like these ?

Camoed a kayak a few years ago. Used plants native to area as "stencils", really pleased with the look.

These camo jobs are awesome. I used truck bed liner spray on one of my stocks but obviously was all black. If that isnt a deal breaker, I have found that my stock still looks brand new.

I did a test run marking camo with pine boughs and sponges. Looked cool but decided I liked the clean look better so kept it solid on the one.

I got my RAR 5.56 back together yesterday. A couple spots could have went better, but over all I’m very pleased. Thanks to everyone for the info in this thread.

Looks good! Did you reinforce the body filler where you built out the stock?

The bag rider/vertical grip is not body filler only. I epoxied and screwed a piece of 2x12 on the bottom. Shaped it to very close to what I wanted, and then smoothed everything out with the body filler.

I've done several. I generally start with a light green base coat, then stripes of black & dark brown, then a couple of coats of stone, a light dusting of the base green to muddy everything up, then webbing & clear coat.

All krylon paints. I buff the stock with a grey scotchbrite bad, wetted with denatured alcohol, then a finish wipe with alcohol on a blue shop towel.

When I painted my Magpul Remington stock I removed the action, hung it up, blasted it with brake cleaner and then spray painted with Krylon. I did three coats with tan, green, and brown using cedar boughs as stencils. I think it turned out well.

the stone paint will smooth out after a year or 2 of use. I did grips on my ridge line and after a month of sheep hunting she was smooth on the side that sits against my back pack.

That's really nice!! What did you use for the pattern?

No pattern, just practice on a board.

Sprayed stock down with elctra clean and wiped down with clean rag. Spray painted large sections of base color with wide transitions and then used different size and shapes of natural sponge for the pattern. Just spray a little of the desired color in a shallow container and dap it in there. Finished it off with a matte clear. Used the rustoleum camo kit and same brand for clear coat. this was about 5 years ago. Still holding up.

That's exactly same stuff I used . worked very well! My only small suggestion is BE PATIENCE and let it dry well... when you think it's dry just wait another day. I put on a bipod and it flattened the paint where it is touching the stock....dumb.

You have a great talent for painting. I can't figure out how you got the spider web looking pattern. What did you do "on a board" to make the lines/webs ??

Here's a few I pumped out.

First I'd try it out on my .22 AirRifle. Was surprised how closely my eye perceived it to follow along with similar coloration feel I was going for. Sort of a Kryptek meets Natural Gear feel to it.


Liked it soo much the .223 Rem 783 was next!


Then finally went back and did up my .308 Win. but kinda ran low on the "Sand" paint, so for the barrel, since last year I was gonna be in D14, I wanted a more Alpine feel to the colors, so used some light foliage green Krylon Ultra Flat as well.

Also on all three I added a little bit of Gray. But the Ash Gray was a lil too white-ish for my liking, so blended in a tiny bit of some Earth Brown to tone it down some. Worked bitchin.
