Any opinions on Starline 223 or 5.56 brass? I see their statement about the 5.56 brass having a “harder base” than their 223 brass. I’ve been using mixed year lake city machine gun brass with good results but want to try something else for the Tikka

It's good enough for me. Shooting it out of a tikka and getting consistent results. Hard to beat for the price IMO. I bought 1k of them to load up for next years S2H class.

I think it works well enough, was all about Lapua when I first started with my 223’s but have since switched to Starline cuz I’m a cheap ass sometimes and hated losing the “nice” brass. Have some with 5 firings and it’s still good to go, working on another batch of 250 pieces to get to 5x then I’ll combine them.

I had issues with the 556 brass in my tikka. I started a thread on it a while ago. I stopped using it and I finally got around to getting the barrels cut and threaded. I showed the smith some photos and shells and he was going to see if the chamber needed honing, but said that’s odd to have to do that in a tikka but the fired brass looks bad.

I've used LC, Win, RP, Starline, Lapua, AP, WCC, federal, nosler, hornady and PPU.
Starline and Lapua are good stuff but Lapua has always been the best. Have gotten more firings on L with zero issues and is more consistent.
But for hunting with AR rifles, I don't use the good stuff.

I started with Lapua but later on it became unavailable and I switched to starline. No issues so far and at this point I don’t see me switching back. I have been using both 223 and 5.56, I don’t have enough loads on either to say one is better than the other. I buy what is available at the time and shoot it.

I bought 1k pieces of 556 brass, a small percentage of them have primer pockets to shallow/out of spec not allowing the primer to be fully seated. Starline does not seem to be worried they don't respond to email inquiries. It does seem like a good bang for the buck option anyway. 1000001912.jpg

I should mention that the brass i spoke about was the 223. I imagine there is a difference in capacity between the 5.56 and 223.

Per their website they are identical except metallurgy. Which is why I went with the 556 over the 223, in hopes of longer life.

The brass ADI used in their old Austrailian outback branded ammo was more consistent than lapua from what I measured. Wish i could go back a few years and buy a bunch of cases of that stuff. Current stuff seems fine but not as good as the old stuff.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I'm not stepping on them extremely hard but I imagine that I'll get quite a few loadings from them.

I have 200ct of the lapua match i shoot in my origin PVA barrel and they seem a bit stouter but even if you can find them, they're much more expensive.

I looked at Lapua, but Starline is sooo much cheaper. If I get three firings on the Starline I’m happy.
