Chest freezers are definitely easier to fill and pack. There is a lot of “wasted” space in an upright freezer. No matter how you pack it, stuff just slides around. It is easier to organize and select certain things, but it is not space efficient. I bought a small chest freezer to help with the issue.
All ground products go in the chest freezer, of whatever species. Really if we are using ground it doesn’t matter what the recipe is, it all works similarly, excluding pork. The upright freezer holds all my roasts and choice cuts. As well as whatever bulk frozen items we get from the store. This has served us pretty good over the years. I can typically store one steer, one to two pigs, and either a deer and elk, or two deer.
