Standing freezer

I need one. I have half a grass fed steer coming this week and have been too busy and kinda dropped the ball

Surely there have been some that are tried and tested. Looking for the most reliable standing freezer option. I don’t want a chest freezer. I have a small one and stuff gets lost in the bottom and they are harder to organize. Plus, they take up too much room for my small garage.

I bought a GE a few years back. It's been great except I accidentally bought the plastic shelf version instead of glass. After I discovered that error I found the glass shelf version was out of stock everywhere with a lead time in weeks to get one. I was stuck and needed it immediately. In short the plastic shelves suck for heavy stuff like meat. It would likely be fine for a typical family but if you're storing meat those plastic shelves will flex and bow. The worst is the top. It flexes enough that it makes the drawer up top hard to use. Get glass if you have the choice. Of course if you buy a simpler model with wire shelves you should be good.

Mine just took a dump on me around 6 weeks ago. Replaced it with this one and so far, so good. GE has a nice first responder/millitary discount too, so the price was right directly from them. This is definitely a little bigger than I had initially, but the extra space has been nice.

I've got a samsung and a beko upright freezer. My next one will almost certainly be another beko. The samsung has been great, but $ for $ the beko was a better value. You'll need 2 of these for a whole steer.

i have 2 21.3 cu ft GE upright freezers, they've been fine. none of the new freezers/fridges last as long as the ones made in the 70s and 80s, but they last long enough to be useful for sure. 4 years on the older one, 1 on the newer one.

GM (General Motors)......it will last you at least 65 years. Mine is a 1960's model and runs like it was just built yesterday. Freezes everything harder than granite and quickly.....when you clack 2 steaks together it sounds like steel plates clacking together. I bet it gets to -40 degrees F. It was built by Frigidaire......and will be replaced by same when that time comes, if ever.

Be cautious of the "frost free" freezers. I found this caused freezer burn after about a year.

That’s good to know. I vac seal everything and my last was the same way without any issues, but I’ll definitely keep an eye out.

Other than a chest freezer I don’t think you can buy a non frost free (manual defrost) anymore. I haven’t seen a manual defrost upright sold in many years now.

I agree, I had to buy a chest freezer last year because I couldn't find an upright.

Good to go, but once they have an accident with the door being left unsealed you pretty much need to move everything out and let them completely defrost for a couple of days to work correctly again.

Funny you mention that. It doesn't surprise me. I just updated my "definitive freezer thread" in the "meat and trophy section. you could very easily fit that entire steer in a 12-14 cu.ft. chest freezer because of the tetris effect. We have resorted to having a shelf or part of a shelf dedicated for a product and the rest goes in the chest freezer
