Standing All day

Over the weekend, I watched a youtube about doing ultra marathons. These guys on their feet running/jogging for 24hrs at a shot and in constant motion. I have a standing desk I use for maybe an hour a day usually. Today when I came in, my desk was at standing height so I randomly decided that I should try to stand for the full 8 hour work day. I'm coming down to the last 10 minutes.. I'm feeling it. I'm tempted to maybe do this 2 or 3 days a week.. Could be an interesting tactic for conditioning the body to stay vertical
 
That standing-desk stuff is awesome, but it falls short in one way. We just didn't evolve to stands all day any more than we evolved to sit all day. The constant-motion of rucking/marathoning is pretty important for blood-flow - and I also suspect, lymph flow. In ways standing just doesn't accomplish. Otherwise, fluids end up pooling in the lower legs, and some of your support muscles/ligaments can also end up getting inadvertently overstressed from how you adjust how you stand, especially early on. It can be pretty helpful to add in 10-20 squats or lunges every half-hour or hour or so, just to get things flowing.
 
I have the same. I alternate from sitting to standing if I am at my desk a bunch. I typically get 5000 to 6000 steps just at work. Standing is supposed to be better for you.
 
I got rid of my chair a few years ago and exclusively stand at my desk. I can actually tell when I'm starting to get sick because I feel like I want to sit!

I had a colleague who had serious back issues. He used a standing desk exclusively in his office. Good job standing for a full workday on your first attempt!
 
A PT suggested to me to have something to put a foot up on for some of the time if using a standing desk. I use my old chair but could be more like a step.
 
Can you elaborate on that?
Having a 6-10" stool or step or block to rest a foot on, changing frequently, can help to distribute stress and alter stress patterns while standing for prolonged periods of time.

Walking pad can also be extremely helpful.
 
Footwear is key. I’m standing 8 hours a day rocking and rolling on a boat. My knees and back suffered. I went and got fitted for some Hoka tennis shoes. Game changer.
 
I can walk for miles and miles and be just fine.

If I stand still at a trade show booth or teaching a conference or class for 8-10 hours per day, my knees and feet hurt at the end of each day.
My gout damaged knees and feet won't stand in place over 2 hours at a time. I'd need a cordless headset and a non boring area to walk amongst.
