After three years of putting in, I drew a Washington Kapowesin tag. Tough hunt, but it is in my back yard. Should be fun!

I'll be hitting the Bitterroot again this year. Im doubtful I'll let an arrow fly unless its a true giant. I have a buddy that really wants his first bear, though.

you can fill that tag if you put the time in. i passed two bears last year but every time ive had that tag i could have filled it. don't get caught picking up sheds in the escapement areas, Clyde's on the war path and says any spring bear hunters he catches picking up sheds hes going to pull there permit for the year. apparently if you see a shed laying back in there your supposed to leave it if your a spring bear hunter. we'll see how that goes...

I heard that... mixed feelings about it. I know a bunch of guys had the tag last year and never even hunted bears, they only put in so they could shed hunt. Which is a drag because there were guys (like me) who WANTED the tag to hunt. On the other hand it stinks that you can't pick up something you find while actually hunting.

Any help you guys want to shoot my way would be very appreciated.

Call the kapowsin office, they will tell you that you are more than welcome to pick up sheds. Clyde just wants to be a cop... tell him to pound sand if he tries to take any sheds from you. He has no rights to do so.

Good luck to the kapowsin pass holders there are lots of bears in there, just sit and glass and you will see them moving.

You guys got me curious so I emailed Claudia. Here is her response:

"You can only hunt south of the Puyallup on our property, no shed hunting, your same key will work just like usual." Claudia

Then she sent me a followup:

"Actually you are a Kapowsin permit holder so yes you can antler pickup, just not if you drive into an escapement area." Claudia

So, basically, IF you are a REGULAR recreational access pass holder (the $350 annual permit, NOT the spring bear only permit) then you can pick up sheds any where except the escapement areas... IF you drove in to them. If you hike in I guess you can do what you want.

If you just have the Spring Bear permit, no shed hunting.

How Clyde will police that, I have no idea, but there it is, straight from the office.

Not to derail the thread but this exactly why I wont buy a Hancock permit. Too many rules!

its not that big a deal. clyde was just getting pissed at guys that draw that tag just to shed hunt from there trucks. the idea of damage hunts is to take animals out of certain areas. theres also a huge amount of guys that hike into those areas to shed hunt. not a single one is all that remote or inaccessible so its not super tough to cover one in a half a day of walking. so he hears all the bitching from guys about spring tag holders picking up sheds. he may not be able to take your shed but if you read the contract you signed he can pull your permit/sticker and key for pretty much what ever he wants to, you agreed to this when you purchased. like i said it shouldnt be a big deal. you want to shoot a bear, go look for one. that is my priority when i have a tag. want to freak out about some dead bone laying on the ground, leave the truck at the gate. easy

I pretty much completely agree with you. To me, their property, their rules. But I haven't lived here very long and don't have any investment really. And, I know they have problems with a bunch of guys putting in for the tag just to shed hunt... Which, as you pointed out, defeats the whole purpose of a depredation hunt. Personally, I'd trade a dozen elk sheds for a bear... but I've never shot one (growing up in the midwest).

What is this place you guys are talking about? I tried to google it. Is this a tree farm? That's what I got with Google. Your discussion kind of peaked my curiosity.
