From their locations map I see SW is all over the West. So I take it as a good sign they are expanding into the Midwest. Maybe you guys from out in their current markets can fill us East/Midwest folks about SW.

What I found odd in their store in Troy MI, is the inventory. They just took over the building from Field & Stream. It appears all SW did was change the sign and expand the firearms dept. everything else in the store looks the same. Including all the (crappy) Field & Stream brand merchandise. I was hoping to see some higher quality and more “serious” goods.

Looking for any and all comments on SW and especially their acquisition of the FS stores if you know.

Our local one in Lansing Michigan took over a gander mountain and it has many of the top name brands. I quite like it

The field and stream store in NY is pretty decent, they carry a fair amount of higher end brands. CS is typical of stores like this, meaning that the employees no slightly less than nothing. Prices suck unless it’s a sale. But the store is there..

Sportsman's used to have a good presence in the upper Midwest and a bit in the east. Used to be my go to store around here because they had a few good to great options of essentials. With how Cabela's stuff started going to crap SW was the best option. They recently moved back into my area and not a big fan. At least here in MN the optics selection is horrible and optics accessories is worse. They do have a great ammunition and reloading section and decent trapping section for last minute or need to have item.

I still visit the one in Bozeman when I'm out west and it is more like the SWs used to be around here. IMO there are really no good sporting goods stores left.

SW went bankrupt several years ago, sold off a bunch of stores, and have since done a pretty darn good job of rebuilding and expanding.

Yes they did. Funny that once they were doing well again, they bought back some of the stores they sold to (outdoor outfitters). Stu is selling olive oil, last I heard.

Warehouse took over this one here months ago and it is still the same as Field and Stream. Same high prices.

I buy a lot of stuff from sportsman's. That said, I could run the store much better than it's being run. Their sales are pretty lackluster. Employee turnover and training seems to be an issue (some have been there a while and some are outstanding, don't get me wrong... But it can be luck of the draw).

My biggest gripe is their website. It's really awful and has no way to shop based on local inventory until you're actually on a product page (unlike, say, home Depot, where I can filter based on what's available at my store).

Last gripe, they have a few awesome clearance deals at any given time, but they're in store only.

The convenience of having a pretty big selection, the good hours, and the nearness to my home will keep me coming back.

Sportmans is awesome for a big box. At least at my local stores they will price match any gun, even online prices as long as it is not below their cost. Which is insane for a brick and mortar. The optics guy and fishing in my local store are both stand up guys, have done some really great deals on gear. Including an optics manufacturer that basically never does sales. Starts with an S.

If you don't have any local smaller shops to support for gear, give them a shot to earn your business. They have been good to us here in UT. Way better than Cabelas since the buyout!

Did Dick's Sporting Goods sell Field & Stream? I thought they were one in the same.

SW is my go to store, they pretty much have what I want and is priced way below what that crap show Cabelas/ass pro is. Their firearm and reloading section is really good and they carry quite a bit of Sitka gear, their archery selection is pretty good too.

Yes, Dick’s sold off f&s to Sportsman’s and made them take their inventory too. That is why you still see F&S stuff in the store. Once it’s all sold off I’m sure you will see a much better selection than they have currently.

I am very happy this happened. F&S sucked!

Hope you’re right. Maybe they should donate it for Christmas before all the potential customers get discouraged! Mind if I ask how you found this info? Just curious.

I have two within 30 mins or so. Good selection, decent prices, good mix of higher end and mid level gear. They do sales for military and first responders which is nice. They have gotten better over the few years they've been in the area while Bass Pro continues to sell junk.

Good to know. Maybe I will start shopping there again now that Dick’s is out of the way.

I stopped at my local F&S store in Altoona, PA and talked to the manager right after the change happened.

I didn't specifically seek him out but he was running the cash register I went to and was very talkative as I was waiting to be checked out.
