Sponge Camo Paint Options

Hi everyone!

I just received my AG Composites Alpine Hunter stock for my upcoming rifle build. I ordered it in raw carbon so I can do my own painting. Im hoping to do some light sponge camo in a metallic ish dark grey. I plan to leave a good portion of the raw carbon visible, then clear coat the entire stock in a 2k clear coat. What paint is everyone using for sponge camo? I would prefer a 2 part hardening paint. I was thinking of cerakote but I'm not sure if it thick enough for this technique. Any other options?

I've done several with Rust-Oleum. Do a base coat, then sponge (2-3 colors). Biggest trick is to always finish with a clear top coat. It really helps the appearance.

Krylon, rust-oleum, or Montana spray paint.

I don't do a base coat or clear. If it rubs off, just re-paint it after the season.

I recently did a stocky’s raw carbon VG using this same basic idea. Spray painted a big piece of cardboard black and then did color combo tests with the 8 or so colors I had laying around until I found what I liked best. I settled on Rapco field drab and rustoleum desert sand for some contrast. I am a huge fan of the Rapco paints since they discontinued the Aervoe line.

Duracoat

Does duracoat do ok being applied with a sponge? My concern is it would be to thin.

We use the airbrush version and spray the sponge. If you are fast and use enough retarder you can spray the item and sponge.

Krylon, rustoleum, are what I use, with clear coat rustoleum on top.

Sanded off the stockys clear coat, let the kids sponge it with krylon, and then a rattle can clear coat over it

That stockys clear must be pretty thick. I lightly sanded mine down, added 1/4” to the grip, added marine tex, sponge painted (krylon khaki and nutmeg) then added two coats of matte clear. Im happy with the results but I didn’t sand enough of the clear off and the sponge paint almost looks like it’s floating above the carbon which hives a 3d look up close. It’s kinda cool looking up close but definitely not the look I was going for.

After sponge paint with various rustoleum colors I have been using a top coat of Spray Max 2k Matte Clear Coat. This is a two part clear coat that provides great grip and a non shiny finish. So far it has been very durable too. Way better than other clear coat I have used in the past.

I’ve done a bunch with 2 part steel JB weld. Scuff the area up, lather on a thin coat, let it cure for like 5-10 min and then just dab at it with a shim or popsicle stick to pull it into little spikes. Let that fully cure for 24 hours and then knock off the sharp points with a quick sanding.

What are you guys using to add the grip texture to the Tikka vg from stockys?

I used marine tex and am very happy with it. I also used plumbers epoxy putty to build up the grip before adding the texture for the palm areas.

2 I’ve painted and textured lately. I have no issue just sponging whatever spray paint I’ve got around over the clear coat. If it rubs off, oh well.

Here is a couple I just finished. Camo spray paint with a matt poly finish coat. Used sponges and a laundry bag to create the patterns..

I use a cheap grout sponge and just tear the corners off of it to mimic a sea sponge.
Krylon and Rustoleum are my "go to" colors and look at other colors in the spray can rack to make it a little different.
There's also the hobby shop if you want to get more exotic for a color pallet.
I use a black paint marker / pen if it needs a bit more shading or even initials, dates, etc.
