Spike elk hunting.....

Asking for some help to help out a friend. I drew a mule deer tag in Utah, 2 of my buddies did not draw they were a point short to be guaranteed. I’ve scouted the unit some for deer and all and encountered elk but only briefly. I’m not an elk hunter and I’ve never elk hunted. Only deer ever...
he is only going to get 4 days to hunt and since I’m going to hunt 12 days I would like to try and help him get on a spike elk that first 4 days before I start focusing solely on my deer tag.
All I know is glassing... high country, high desert, and desert in Arizona for muleys and coues, that’s all I know. Any advice at all no matter how small would be helpful. He’s on rokslide also so I’m sure he will chime in.
Unit is high country for the most part, 11,000ft dates we will be there are August 22nd thru the 2nd of September. Southern unit.

Basically spot and stalk and sitting water in August. Cows may respond to some lost cal falls if in pretty close.

I’ve located some seeps in there before I had considered for even sitting on for deer that early. I thought that might be a viable options for elk as well in August

I don't know why, but for me....finding spikes is harder than finding 350" bulls. In 35+ years of elk hunting I have seen 4 spikes. So doing the opposite of me would be good advice. That sit and glass option might be a good idea as I hardly ever do that.

It’s all I really know and really enjoy. I don’t know if I’ll ever be big into elk hunting because of that part. Not really a fan of hunting turkeys either lol and they say elk are big turkeys lol...

Late season rifle hunting is a lot of fun. It's all spot and stalk like mule deer hunting.

That’s actually what I put in for in Arizona is late rifle. I’d been told that before, and I put in 2nd season rifle Colorado this year also.

Spikes love to come into cow mews as I think they are lonely once the rut starts to kick in.
We call them in all the time

Here is a short video of a 'spike' that came in to cow mews - Spike Elk - YouTube

Be sure to look close and make sure they are a true spike!

Is the one in the video a legal spike in Colorado? :)
