I will be headed to a unit for elk in September in south west Colorado, I’ve never been there before and am curious what are some must haves for vehicle trails there? And what the terrain is like on the roads…

I will be bringing my 2004 tundra 4x4, 2in lift 33in tires, winch on the front..

Anything I need to be throwing in my truck for the trip besides basic recovery gear, first aid and tools?

Will be there late September for 2 weeks

I hunt units 70 & 71 fairly regularly. Flat tires are fairly common from the dirt roads. Last time out I had an internal separation too. My advice is an extra spare tire!

The ability to (quickly) air down and air back up again is the single best way to stack the odds in your favor of avoiding getting stuck, having a flat and avoiding component failure such as a broken tye rod etc.

It really depends on what you are doing. I assume with your post you are looking to get off the beaten path with your rig. A good quality saw, incase any trees block you in chainsaw is preferred but a bigger silky can get the job done with some extra manual labor. A good spade shovel is also a must. Lastly, don't be the guy who pushes the limits counting on the winch but has no idea how to use it safely. Have fun!

Minimum:
Full size spare tire.
Tire plugs.

Might be a good idea:
Hand saw or electric chain saw, depending on how remote you plan to be.
Air compressor

Likely not needed:
Tire chains.

Also, since you mentioned you have a lift: a couple of blocks of wood would be a good idea. To make sure your tire jack can lift your vehicle up high enough to change your tire. (Many people that have a lift on their trucks don’t check to make sure their factory jack can extend high enough to lift their larger tire off the ground. Make sure that’s not you, ahead of time!!!)

Chains, tow strap, comealong.....if you slide off the road a bit, you'll be glad you brought them. Most of the time they will be just extra weight. But Mother Nature.....
