What is a piece of gear or something you take with you now on hunts you never knew you needed until you got it. Something many of us may not have or may not know about.

This is on my mind because while looking for new trekking poles I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Easton-9218...185?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20ea6496a9

For $8 I will try it. I didn't know they made these but I use my poles as a bipod to shoot. I have held them in place for my wife to shoot her last two animals off of as well. I have not used it yet but it could be something I never knew existed that becomes a mainstay in my pocket.

Paper and pen.

When in nature I like to record my observations and experiences. Especially when solo and I am less distracted and can wax poetic  Years ago my wife bought me a write in the rain hunting notebook, case and pen. I always regret when I do not document a trip.

As a kid, a favorite pastime was reading my grandfathers hunting/camping notebook. I would like to think that my grand kids would be interested in my exploits too.

A GPS. Have no idea how I survived all those years without one. I guess I just used my maps, compass, and flagging tape. And still do, however, I love marking wallows and kill sites and stuff like that on the GPS.

Oh, and a meat hauling pack. And all these years I just thought that hauling quarters and halves over our shoulders was the way to do it.:(

I found this little light last season. Lasted a couple nights on one charge and lights up the whole tipi. Super light.

Interesting light. Would definitely save the headlamp batteries. Did you just pre-charge it before your trip?

I have thought about taking reading material and really need to try it out.

This year was the first year I took a book and it was fantastic. Due to weather on my deer hunt, I spent a good chunk of one day in the tent and having something to read was fantastic. My buddy was even trying to convince me to tear out pages once I had read them so he had something to read. I also liked it since it gets dark so soon on later season hunts. I always hate going to bed at 8:00 as I will only sleep so long and just toss and turn. Having the book allowed me to kill an hour or two before turning in.

My buddy took a book once, no reading got done, but he did forget his teepee that trip, the book was missing a few pages by the end of the trip

Yup, having a book along can provide some other uses as well. I hadn't thought about backup TP but that would work. Also great for getting a fire/wood stove going if necessary. Tear out pages and ball them up in your boots to help absorb moisture at night.

In reality, with good weather and hard hunting, I may not read much at all but when the suck rolled in I was sure glad I brought it along.

Yep. Pre-charged and used three days inside tent. It's a great lantern. $14.
